This is a collection of information I have gathered on creatures and things in legends and lore.
Amethyst
We have finally arrived at the month of love. Today let's look at February's birthstone, amethyst.

The Greeks believed this stone had many powers including the ability to protect against intoxication. Its name actually comes from the Greek word meaning sober. It was associated with the ancient Greek god of wine, Bacchus. It was said that one day he was angry and vowed that the next mortal to come by would be feed to tigers. A beautiful girl came by who was named Amethyst. She was going to worship the goddess Diana. Diana saw her and turned her into a clear pillar of quartz to protect her from the tigers. Once Bacchus saw what happened her poured wine over the girl turning her purple. One common belief was to serve wine in amethyst goblets to prevent overindulgence. Amethyst has long been used by royalty probably due to its purple color. At one point it was considered more expense then diamonds. Amethyst has also long been used by Christan churches. It has become a sign of spirituality and piety. As a gift it is a sign of protection and the power to overcome difficulties. Amethyst is also said to help in battle, control evil thoughts, help hunters capture animals, and help with business matters.
