Knives and other sharps objects tend to be seen as bad luck. They are seen as cutting the good luck or the relationship itself. A way around it is to attach a coin that the receiver can then give back to you. This way they are paying for the item.

Opals are considered the most unlucky of gemstones and should not be given as gift. The only exception is if the receiver is born in October.
Shoes as a Christmas gift is suppose to signify that the receiver will walk away from you.
Giving an emerald will confer luck, success, and happiness. Unless you give it on a Monday.
Giving a friend gloves means you will get in a fight.
