May Day (Irish Customs)
In Ireland on the eve of May Day yellow flowers like marigolds and buttercups were gathered and spread around homes to bring good luck. Cows were also decorated with flowers. The morning dew was thought to have magic powers. It was used to wash the face to bring good health for the year. It was bad luck to let cows out to pasture before noon. It was thought that faeries would try to steal them. Milking your neighbors cow was also lucking and would help the cows produce more milk in the year. It was also good to give your neighbor butter and milk on this day. If not your cows would produce less milk. May Day was also a time for fortune telling. Snail trails was used to reveal the initials of a future lover.
