Today is International Peace Day.
The peace symbol was designed by Gerald Holtom. The original sketches show the symbol that stood for the death of man and the unborn child. It was derived from the naval code known of semaphore. It is made of the code letters N and D which stands for nuclear disarmament. N is made with two flags with the arms downward at a 45 degree angle and D is made with two flags with one arm up and one arm down.
