Three is a good number in Chinese culture because it sounds like the word "alive". In Vietnam taking a picture of three people is considered bad luck because it is said the one in the middle will die. Luck is said to come in threes. Three denotes divine perfection. It is also common to see it used to denote wholeness since lots of things have three parts that make one whole thing. Spitting three times is though to protect one from evil. It is bad luck for three people to light a cigarette from the same match.
