Today we will look at one of October's birth flower, the marigold.
One meaning of the marigold is sorrow or sympathy. In Victorian times it was used to say, " My thoughts are with you." The common name comes from the term "Mary's Gold". They were considered the flowers of the Virgin Mary. The flower also was a sign of constancy in love and was used as a herb thrown at weddings and in love potions. In Welsh folklore if a marigold bloom didn't open before seven it was a sign that there would be thunder that day. Calendula was also the most sacred plant of ancient India It was used to decorate holy statues.
