Just another boring day. Nothing special ever happened around here in Marigold Fields. The only things that brought some comfort around here was the blazing sun, the breezy wind, the marigold fields, the high hills, the faint scent of Gran's cooking, and her. Aurora.
I met her years ago. We were so little back then. I was but a boy and she was but a small angel. She was always my little angel. From the first day she arrived in Marigold Fields, she was just that. To this day I would never understand as to why this little angel was forced into an orphanage. Especially one like ours. It wasn't the worst place to be in, but it wasn't the best either. If anything the only thing worth living in this place for was Gran's famous cooking.
Gran was the owner of the Aranajado Orphanage. She was a fat little old lady, but she was sweet as birthday cake. Watch out though cross her once, and that cake usually turns into a bitter lemon. She was strict alright, but only when necessary. Like the time i ran the chickens out of the coop. I spent all night looking for them. I didn't even get dinner that night. Which was worst, she had cooked my favorite. Cheeseburgers with onions and pickles. But aside from Gran's cooking, she made it worth staying there for the last ten years. Aurora.
The day she joined the orphanage, she was a small little fragile thing. Child services had brought her here. Usually, i just shrugged my shoulders and walked away from the new kids, but she was different. Her eyes were the first thing that caught my attention. Those beautiful amber eyes.
She usually sat alone in the playground, keeping to herself and swinging on the swing. Her little brown curls bounced around her thin face. I watched her for a couple of days until I got enough courage to introduce myself.
"H-Hey...."
She looked up at me suddenly, as if she hadn't expected to see me.
"Um...My name is Dominick." I forced a smile. "Whats yours?"
Those little eyes stared at me for a while. I swallowed then adjusted my collar a bit. She looked me up and down which caused me to blush. "W-Whats your name?!" I asked again, not meaning to be loud, but i couldn't help it.
She jumped back a bit then stared at me. Soon, she broke out into a cry.
That night, I went to bed without another cheeseburger.
The next day I tried again. I was starving this time when i sat next to her.
She stared at me and expected me to say something loud again. This time, i just kept my mouth shut, staring at all the other kids who ran around the playground. Those fake grins. We all knew each one of us were hurting. I hated to smile. Only because i knew there was no reason too. We were in prison here. And we had to stay till we grew older because no one was going to want us. Well....Not me at least.
I saw her in the corner of my eye staring at me. When i looked at her, she looked away quickly. I couldn't help to chuckled "What is it?" i asked, looking away from her, hoping it would make her a bit comfortable.
"Your....tall...." she whispered.
I jumped at that and stared at her. It was true, I was unnaturally tall compared to the other kids. I had grown up with that fact. There were kids in my class who were about a foot shorter than me and would pick on me, calling me, Legs, Stretch, and Godzilla. But i didn't care, chicks like guys who are taller than them. But to hear this little angel call me that, i couldn't help but to blush.
"Y-Yeah....I am....." I shrugged a bit. "Is that why you cried?"
"Y-Yeah......" she whispered.
"I'm sorry." I nodded. "I can leave you alone if you would like."
She shook her head. "No.....I don't want to be alone right now...."
I stared at her for a while then looked back at the playing kids.
"Aurora."
I heard her whisper. I made no attempt to look at her, but she continued to speak.
"My name is Aurora." I could see her from the corner of my eye look at me, which i couldn't help but to look back. For the first time, I saw an angel smile at me, and for the first time, i couldn't help but to smile.
We became the best of friends after that. we would play on the Se-saw together, we swung together, we even went to the beach together. Of course i got in trouble for running off to the beach with her, but it was worth it to see her smile. Even though, when we went, i noticed the bruises on her inner thigh. I always wanted to know, but I never wanted to ask, because i knew it would probably hurt her.
I never knew, till one Sunday afternoon.
We were outside of school licking our ice cream. I had stolen some money from some punk that was picking on a nerd. Award money is what i called it. we just sat there staring at the clouds till i noticed she wasn't eating. "Whats wrong?" I asked.
"Do you ever wonder why I am here?" she asked me so softly, I could barely hear her.
I couldn't lie to her. especially the way she looked right now. She looked like a frozen statue with curly dark brown hair. "Y-yes....I do often.... But i don't need to know unless you want to tell me."
She was quite for the rest of that time. She never ate her ice-cream. She had let it melt in her hands.
I was the first one to say something, "Lets go home."
She nodded sweetly at that then grabbed my hand. Something she had never done before. I tried to hold back a blush, but it was hard.
It was the longest walk home I could ever remember. As we walked, she just stared at the ground and i stared forward. Suddenly, Aurora came to a stop. I looked at her questioningly but just waiting on her.
"My....My father raped me." she said it so suddenly, i didn't understand at first.
"W-What?" I asked, my eyes wide and in disbelief.
"He...he raped me.....Constantly....my father....and when he was done...Momma would beat me senseless....till i couldn't move....screaming that i was a whore...."
I couldn't control myself any longer. I quickly wrapped my arms around her and held her close.
"Aurora.....I'll protect you.....Nothing like that....will ever happen to you again....I promise....They will never hurt you again...and no one ever will....so long as there is breath in my body Aurora...I'll keep you safe....."
Aurora was stiff in my hands, probably caught off guard by my movements, but soon i felt her fragile arms wrap around my waist. "You promise?" she asked.
"Cross my heart."
That was the last time we spoke about her parents. She had asked me about my parents, but honestly, i never knew them. She only smiled and called me lucky. That wouldn't have been the last nickname she gave me. Aurora would call me Stretch, Daddy Long legs, Giraffe. And a number of other names. No matter how much she picked on me, i could never be mad at her. Not with her beautiful brown eyes, and her voice that would make angels cry.
Her beauty was memorizing as we grew. Her curves got thinner because of the lack of baby fat and her brown curls seemed to flourish around her face. She was so beautiful. My angel. My love.
It would be foolish not to say i don't love her. That's alright. that day i was going to confess to her. I was going to tell her exactly how i felt. I was going to tell her how much I loved her.
"Dominick!" I heard her angel voice hit my ears. I jumped up from the marigolds and saw her coming or me. She nearly glided over those flowers.
"There you are! Where have you AHHH!" she screamed.
I jumped up and looked around at that. "W-What is it?"
"What on earth did you do to your black hair?!"
"O-Oh, this?" I asked, brushing my fingers through my hair. "I got tired of the black, I wanted to go white."
"Figures you would do something crazy like that." she put her hands on her hips.
"The ladies love it." I winked at her.
"Oh shut up." she waved a hand.
"So what do I owe this lovely visit?"
"Close your eyes." I blushed at that thought. My imagination was getting the best of me. I kept thinking maybe she was the one to confess to me. I swallowed hard and closed my eyes.
"O-Okay." I mumbled. Soon I felt something cold go over my eyes. I jumped then opened my eyes.
"Oh wow! Those look great on you!" Aurora clapped her hands together happily.
"W-what are these?" I asked, noticing how triangular they were.
"Its those sunglasses you were looking at." she giggled. "The ones that you said make you look bad a**."
"These are them?!" I jumped up then grinned big."Holy s**t, thank you Aurora! I'll never take them off!"
"Promise?" She asked.
"Cross my heart." I did so, but then picked her up and swung her around. My heart raced with her in my arms. With my shades on, I felt very confident. I blushed hard then hugged her tight. "Aurora.....I have something to tell you..." i whispered in her ear.
"Let me go first." Aurora gave me this look i had never seen before. My cheeks were on fire.
"O-Okay...." i set her down and looked as deep as i could in her eyes.
"Dominick....I'm....getting married."
My world started to spin. "Married?" I repeated, then all the sudden, everything became dark, and all i remember is my head hitting the ground.
