Eternally Ephemeral
And murdered dreams stand in line, in the streets, despite the time...sell a soul for a single dime, and never brood nor dwell.
Heading Back Home
“Why?”

“Shouldn’t you be questioning where, not inquiring the reason?”

“Where doesn’t matter. It’s all the same to me.”

“Aren’t you the odd one.” His steps hastened slightly. The sun had already set, but Ari was beginning to question if it had ever even risen on her. She let out a soft sigh, and began to drag her feet, holding back the tears once more.

“What is it?” The crunching of the blackened leaves from the dying trees came to an abrupt silence. Silence says more than any amount of sounds and articulated words could ever wish to get across.

“Why don’t you just fly…” Ari hung her head as she whispered the words.

“You know…” the crunching started up again as the other figure walked back towards the younger girl, “…there is no question where your name came from.”

“Heh…” She crouched down on the ground and pulled her knees to her tightly. She sniffled slightly, but made no effort to hide her tears; what was the point? He had seen her like this far more than her smiles, at least, for as far back as she could remember. Which wasn’t very far. Not quite two decades…

“You know why I won’t fly.” The man let out a sigh, sitting on the ground beside her. “I know this is hard, little one, but you must go on. You have to get home.”

“Why?” She looked up at him with pleading eyes. He sighed again, and stood up. Closing his violet eyes serenely, the man’s pale frame began glowing softly as two huge, raven black wings unfurled behind him. They matched the night beautifully. Ari had always wondered how someone who is usually so sarcastic and flippant, could have such a somber presence. And how someone she completely hated, could be the one she felt closest to. Could be one she loved.

“Is this what you want, Ariadne? Do you want me to leave you here, by yourself?” His wings spread out and fluttered softly in the cool breeze. She shuddered, head tucked to her chest as she became painfully aware of the absence that engulfed her. The void. The darkness her soul had succumbed to so long ago.

“Look…” He stopped glowing as Ari managed to muster up her voice, which came off as a barely audible whisper. “I’m too far gone. My will is dying. I can no longer breathe. Existence is just too much.” Her despair radiated from her, and brought the dark-winged angel to his knees. “Alec…I’m sorry.”

“No.” He grabbed a hold of her shoulders. “You WILL go on. I can’t keep watching you destroy yourself. Do you not understand?”

“Understand what…?”

“That sometimes, you just…have to jump. Sometimes, you have to stop asking why.” He smiled at her with that sad smile of his, and she hung her head. He kept gazing at her, until he removed his hand from her shoulder with a slight recoil as she quickly stood up, a vague smile playing across her lips.

“Where are we going, Alec?”
