Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.

Some people say their life is full of darkness and I wonder why they don't just try and switch the lights on.

In complete darkness we are all the same, it is only our knowledge and wisdom that separates us, don't let your eyes deceive you.

A man must dream a long time in order to act with grandeur, and dreaming is nursed in darkness.

As far as we can discern, the sole purpose of human existence is to kindle a light of meaning in the darkness of mere being.

The darkness of death is like the evening twilight; it makes all objects appear more lovely to the dying.

The cynic is one who never sees a good quality in a man and never fails to see a bad one. He is the human owl, vigilant in darkness and blind to light, mousing for vermin, and never seeing noble game. The cynic puts all human actions into two classes - openly bad and secretly bad.

Some knowledge and some song and some beauty must be kept for
those days before the world again plunges into darkness.

There is no such thing as darkness;only a failure to see.

You can't study the darkness by flooding it with light.

It's the night that makes the dawning. It's the depths that make the heights. It's the roots that make the branches. It's the darkness that gives birth to Light.

Everything has its wonders, even darkness and silence, and I've learned that whatever state I may be in, therein to be content.

I am not bound to win, I am bound to be true. I am not bound to succeed, but I am bound to live up to the light I have.

No matter how dark things seem to be or actually are, raise your sights and see possibilities-- always see them for they're always there.

It doesn't matter how long we may have been stuck in a sense of our limitations. If we go into a darkened room and turn on the light, it doesn't matter if the room has been dark for a day, a week, or ten thousand years - we turn on the light and it is illuminated. Once we control our capacity for love and happiness, the light has been turned on.

Darkness is only driven out with light, not more darkness.

Knowing your own darkness is the best method for dealing with the darknesses of other people.

Light thinks it travels faster than anything but it is wrong. No matter how fast light travels, it finds the darkness has always got there first, and is waiting for it.

Character, like a photograph, develops in darkness.

Time takes it all whether you want it to or not, time takes it all. Time bares it away, and in the end there is only darkness. Sometimes we find others in that darkness, and sometimes we lose them there again.

If there be light, then there is darkness; if cold, heat; if height, depth; if solid, fluid; if hard, soft; if rough, smooth; if calm, tempest; if prosperity, adversity; if life, death.

There's a dark side to each and every human soul. We wish we were Obi-Wan Kenobi, and for the most part we are, but there's a little Darth Vader in all of us. Thing is, this ain't no either-or proposition. We' re talking about dialectics, the good and the bad merging into us. You can run but you can't hide. My experience? Face the darkness. Stare it down. Own it. As brother Nietzsche said, being human is a complicated gig. So give that ol' dark night of the soul a hug. Howl the eternal yes!

When we walk to the edge of all the light we have and take the step into the darkness of the unknown, we must believe that one of two things will happen. There will be something solid for us to stand on or we will be taught to fly.

What makes a hero? Courage, strength, morality, withstanding adversity? Are these the traits that truly show and create a hero? Is the light truly the source of darkness or vice versa? Is the soul a source of hope or despair? Who are these so called heroes and where do they come from? Are their origins in obscurity or in plain sight?

As you walk through the storm, Hold your head up high, And don't be afraid of the dark, At the end of the storm, Is a golden sky, And the sweet silver song of the lark, Walk on through the wind, Walk on through the rain, Though your dreams be tossed and blown. Walk on, walk on, With hope in your hearts, And you'll never walk alone, You'll never walk alone.

I have become my own version of an optimist. If I can’t make it through one door, I’ll go through another door – or I’ll make a door. Something terrific will come no matter how dark the present.

The day is for honest men, the night for thieves.

Forests in the day are friendly places. They remind you of Sunday walks, swooshing leaves, holding a parent's big, warm hand, or providing that hand yourself. At night the woods take the gloves off and remind you why you're nervous in the dark. Night forests say "Go find a cave, monkey-boy, this place is not for you."

You can't stand up to the night until you understand what's hiding in its shadows.
