I was looking through one of my old notebooks (again) and found notes for a cute short story I'd been planning to write.
It was about two gay guys, a Japanese one and a half-Japanese one- like, real Japanese, not Japanese American. And the full Japanese one, Kisho, had never brought his boyfriend, the half Japanese dude Lee, home to Japan to meet his family or had even informed them that he was dating him, and they'd been together for six years. Lee assumed that Kisho's parents were homophobes, and that was why he wasn't bringing him home. But though Kisho's parents were big traditionalists, they were very accepting of him- when Lee hears this, he decides something along the lines of 'well then! Take me there, you big jerk!'
Kisho eventually begrudgingly agrees to bring him home to meet his family. His three sisters love Lee, his brother thinks he's pretty cool and his mother is impressed with his poise and respect and all, but his father doesn't really like him. Not because he's male, but because of some other factor I didn't decide on. I was thinking because he's not in touch with his Japanese roots.
This freaks pretty much everyone out-- except Lee. Lee can't understand why everyone's so worked up over mild distaste.
"He's not particularly upset with me. He said that as long as you're happy-"
"You have no idea, Lee! This is why I didn't want you here."
"Babe, he's fine! He said that-"
"Oh my God, just shut up. I'm not ever sleeping ever again. Ever. Okay?"
"...that's probably not healthy."
But he falls asleep anyway. And in the middle of the night, Lee wakes up to a creature that looks strangely similar to this stealthily cutting off Kisho's gorgeous, long hair while he sleeps.
Because that creature is a Kami-kiri. It's a yokai- a Japanese demon- that cuts off the hair of a bride-to-be if the father doesn't approve of the marriage.
Lee thinks it's just a dream and goes back to sleep. But when he wakes up, Kisho is flipping his shite in the bathroom and slamming stuff around.
"It thought I was a girl!" He shrieks. "It actually thought I was a girl! Again! It always does this!"
And his brother Jin start laughing at him uproariously and soon explains it to Lee.
The reason Kisho didn't want to go to Japan was because every time he brought a guy home, his dad disapproved, thinking that Kisho was too good for like all of them. And then he'd get his hair chopped off by the Kami-kiri- yes, every time- because it always assumed he was a girl.
After the fact, Kisho's dad says he's come to kind of like Lee.
Yes, after. After Kisho gets his hair cut off by a yokai.
"Thanks, dad."
