I have noticed something: I began with Michael. He was my sole musician for close to five years. He was always my favorite. I was fervent for information about him, and that thirst for knowledge would not be satiated. Every song was it's own independant awesomeness to me.
And then it was Queen and Michael Jackson. Sole difference: Freddie Mercury is dead, and the band can't release new material. Over the past year and a half, I have added new artists to my musical palette; Journey, System of a Down, Foreigner, some Prince, Lemon Demon, Rammstein, and many, many others, oft times choosing only one or two songs I liked. But Michael Jackson, Queen, and Lemon Demon were the three majors, with the possible addition of System of a Down.
But here's the thing: All of them but Michael Jackson were relatively unimportant.
Queen-Freddie Mercury's dead, and Queens through with it because of that. They disbanded when he died.
System of a Down-They're on a long-term hiatus. No one knows when, or if, they'll re-form.
Lemon Demon-Were they to disband, Neil can still make music on his own. He made it for years before Lemon Demon and could survive quite nicely on his own, I think. Despite this, Lemon Demon is still the most vulnerable of the musicians I listen to.
Foreigner, Rammstein, and Journey-I don't know if they're still together or not, but I'm more of a casual listener, anyway.
Prince-I only have a few songs I like by him.
My point is that nearly all of my favorite musicians are through with their mucial careers. And if they're not, it's all right because I am either a casual listener or have no ability to recognize the fact that danger may lie in their path. In the latter, I am speaking, of course, of Lemon Demon. I think this is due in part to the fact that he is nowhere near as famous as any of the others.
And now he's dead. My hero is dead. I haven't taken it in yet, and I can't begin to imagine what it'll be like when I do.
