I was staring at an ant today at work, trying to decide weather or not to squish it. I was busy folding the towels that we put in the golfcarts (which people use for various reasons) and placing them in stacks on top of the washer, when this little ant comes crawling along at a snail’s pace. I looked at it for a minute or two, just staring.

I was completely torn between smashing it or just scooching it away.

None of my co-workers were back there, so the only thing I heard were the trees in the wind (We always have wind at Silverhorn Goldclub). The little guy was walking and then he stopped. I raised my hand to smack it, but then stopped. Did I really want to kill him?

And then I was stuck again.

Finally, I just swept him aside onto the dryer. The top of it was empty and he just moseyed on farther as I went back to work.

Everything has worth, even little things. That ant has a place in the world.

I have grown up being told that I wasn’t really worth anything. But as I sit here now, as I talk to the people whom I care for and I think about the people that I love, I realize that I am worth something. I can see it in them. They way they look at me, how they write to me, how they speak to me, in these little mannerisms, I can tell that I am cared for.

And it makes me so happy.

I have a place, just like that little ant, among those I love.

That alone is enough to live happily.
