There was a really big storm yesterday that lasted from 6 pm to waaaay late in the night. I hoped it didn't reach my birds. Milton's still at the house, and still consuming dog food each night. As of late, he's started to crow in the morning. Normally, this wouldn't matter, but about a week ago we learned that a neighbor has thought about calling the police about my crowing roosters. Which means Mr. Burby may not be able to come back. I wish I knew what to do.
Went out around one o' clock. When we first drove up, only four or five birds came to greet us, which was really odd. I was worried they got displaced because of the storm. Dad suggested walking down to the barn to see if any of them had gone down there. Turns out that's where quite a few of them were. They were scratching around fresh hay bales.
Not only were the chickens down there, but the geese were down there too. It was the first time in quite a while that I saw them up close. The babies aren't really babies anymore. They're all feathered out and are almost as big as Lucy and Ozzy. One of them has grey wing tips. After watching them for a while, I went back up to the coop, with an entourage of chickens.
Dee is still sitting. I gave her one Amerucana egg to sit on. Looks like Maple and Powder's broodiness only lasted a day. I did a head count, and I noticed that Betina was missing. I searched around for her and ended up picking wild raspberries. The bushes have thorns, but it's worth it. You can't beat wild raspberries. Didn't find Betina though.
After searching around without any luck, I decided to go up to the turkey coop and check on Jenny and Gilly. Jenny was outside pacing against the fence, as always. I really want to let them out, but chickens and turkeys can spread disease to each other, so I can't risk it. Besides, the turkeys have a nice pen, so I really don't feel too guilty about my decision.
When I went in, Gilly was inside, and wanted to be held as soon as she saw me. She's such a sweetie. I held her for a while, but she got off my lap when I kept swatting mosquitoes. She was standing off to the side, panting, (it was a hot day) so, in play, I splashed some water on her. Turns out she liked it. So, Gilly got her first shower. I flicked water on her, ran it down her back, patted it on her neck, and splashed it under her wings. Gilly really enjoyed it, but the litter got soaked. I tried splashing water on Jenny, but she didn't enjoy it, so I stopped.
Eventually, I went back down to the chicken coop and was getting ready to go when I spotted Betina! I tried to hold her, but she ran. Ah well. I wonder where she went though.
