Arachne sitting with her friend Speaks of pride that, seems to never end “I’ve woven the greatest tapestry the world has ever seen! I bet ol’ Athena is jealous of this weaving queen.” Her friends all gasp, afraid of what to say When suddenly Athena appeared to say “Nay!” “You cannot defeat me!” She cries “I am a goddess and it is you whom I despise! To think you could out-best me, you didn’t think too well And now for all your pride, your horridness shall swell.” “Bring it…”the small teen had taunted This choice of hers, forever it has haunted Her spirit tainted by this mortal sin… “Alright!” cried Athena, “The contest begins!” Athena started her masterpiece with a contest she had won Poseidon was no match for her, she was sure to win this one She looked to see her young opponent’s art And was shocked when she saw the god closest to her heart Her father Zeus, his reputation being defiled His mistress’s all shown, making him look so vile The goddess all a-flustered, the mortal made a smirk I can not let her win like this; I need to make this work the goddess wove in scenes of the god’s good deeds But the mortal just continued with Zeus’s infidelities Athena was nearing the end of her art, as well as her rope When she looked again at Arachne, and there was no hope “I must admit you’re work is quite flawless But that does not make me wrathless” She smashed the mortal’s creation with the shuttle on the loom As well as hitting her on the head, thus sealing her doom Arachne realized her huge mistake and felt horrid She ran to her home, ashamed of her art so florid Soon grabbing a small step so that she could reach up to the rope She wrapped it round her throat, she just couldn’t cope Athena rushed in, just in time to the poor girl down “I shall spare you, no need to frown” The rope turned to silken string, and the girl into a spider “Now go and spread your gift around, you are my desire”
