Shock washed over her body. What the hell had just happened? In one minute her life had turned from the epitome of happiness to the definition of misery. It was unthinkable. Amelia? Dead? Was there a God? Surely not, he would never let such a thing happen, but of course there she was going again. Thinking God was a man. Sometimes, she believed God was a woman, because who is the creator of life, the holder of the children? Women. But day in and day out, all Viv had seen on the news were women getting raped, robbed, divorced and stripped of all their dignity. Spoiled goods, as some boys put it. Viv, was flustered by that kind of bullshit. Who made them spoiled goods?! She wanted to yell. It certainly was her, it wasn’t any other girl! No other girl has a seed to plant!!!! She sighed, frustrated, feeling every emotion known to humankind, she grew tired and had to sit. Soon the heavy tears were brought forth, by the next phone call. They needed someone to identify the body. “Officer, you know damn well that it’s my daughter!” Mrs. Paolini screeched. “Mrs. Paolini…I know this is hard, but it’s mandatory. Then you can talk to the funeral directors Federico and Johnston. They can help you get the funeral underway.” More tears. And for the first time, Vivian found the fear in her mother’s eyes. The sorrow, the disappointment, but…no life. There was a shell of pure, solid misfortune sitting in front of her, teabags underneath her eyes, crows feet clawing her eyes, and faint lines around her mouth, that to any one else would be laugh lines, but Vivian knew that she had never had a good laugh. “Well, let’s go.” She stood up, bathrobe drooping off her slightly anorexic body. “Uh, Clara, How the hell can you just move over to the morgue and see your daughter, has it not registered that she is no longer with us? That she will never be the dancer we wanted to see, performing Broadway hits in New York? That I now, am missing a sister, friend, ally, and most importantly, angel? She was everything to me Ms. Paolini! She was basically my life! I CAN’T GO!” “You don’t think I care? You don’t think I want to die? You don’t think I would trade my life for hers in a heartbeat? She was basically your life? She WAS my life! She is me! What else can I do? I have to identify her body, to make sure that she gets the funeral she deserves! And don’t you EVER call me by my first name again! I am your mother. I gave birth to you! I held you in my womb for nine months! I think I deserve to be respected!” “Well maybe I deserve to have some respect! At least I didn’t leave MY daughter in Italy with my brother! At least I didn’t blame my daughter for the death of my husband!” “I DID NOT LEAVE YOU!” “YES, YOU ******** DID! I WAS WITH UNCLE LEO SINCE DAD DIED! YOU NEVER ******** CARE! Yeah you buy me presents and expect things to be ok with money, but you also bought Amelia everything too, you never paid attention AND NOW LOOK WHERE SHE IS. DEAD, COLD, ******** LIFELESS! YOU’RE A b***h!” “You do not have the right to raise your voice to me young lady!” “Yeah, like I haven’t heard that on TV. before.” The two screamed and stormed off.
