~~~Episode TwentySeven~~~
Silence.
That’s all there was as Haku piloted, wincing slightly as a pain shot through his arm. His wounds were still bothering him, though he refused to admit it to Zeph or Yuri. He took a hand off of the controls as he stretched the arm, trying to un-stiffen it. He was glad to be back in his normal clothes, the ones from Vampire City had been too tight for his liking.
The doors opened, and Haku glanced back as Zeph came into the cockpit area.
“How’s Yuri doing?”
Haku asked as he turned his attention back to the front. Zeph came in, sitting in seat beside Haku’s,
“She’s sleeping right now, but she’s doing a lot better. I’m just impressed that she still has that happy attitude of hers.”
He said, leaning back in the seat.
Haku nodded,
“Good. The next world is quite a ways, and there are a lot of obstacles in the way. I’m going to need you in here to help.”
Zeph sat up at this,
“Obstacles?”
“Yeah, a lot of debris and asteroids…I even picked up a couple warp gates that lead to who knows where.”
“Where did it all come from? Did it build up from destroyed worlds?”
Haku considered this before speaking, his voice lowered.
“Most likely. Out of the seven worlds that sent distress signals, only two remain.”
He said, regret and guilt hiding in his voice. Zeph shook his head,
“That’s horrible…how did those two worlds survive? Did the natives there fight off the heartless on their own?”
Haku shook his head,
“No. It’s impossible. They could’ve held them off for a time, but without a traveler’s help, the heartless would eventually find the heart of the world and destroy it.”
Zeph raised a brow as he let this process,
“But…if that’s the case, then how? How did they make it without help? Are their other travelers?”
Haku narrowed his eyes slightly,
“No other travelers are still alive in our dimension. They’ve all been killed in battle. The only other way would be if the keybearer went to those worlds.”
Zeph eyes widened,
“The keybearer?! Does that mean we’re getting closer to finding him?”
He asked, excitement rising in his eyes. Haku didn’t respond for a moment, his eyes drifting over the control panel with all of its flashing buttons and lights. He pressed a couple,
“Zeph, I need you to buckle up and help. We’re coming up on the mess.”
He said. Zeph’s smile flickered and he nodded,
“Right.”
He said, pulling the belt over his chest as he turned his attention to control panel.
“Just tell me what to do.” He said.
Yuri shifted in her sleep, her fists clenching as she tossed and turned, mumbling under her breath. Suddenly she sat up with a jolt, breathing heavily as she was pulled from the world of dreams. She was in a cold sweat, and agonizing pain spiked through her back, causing her to grit her teeth as she held back a whimper. The room turned, and she realized there was a dim roaring sound in the air. She sat up, flinging the covers off of herself as she leapt to her feet.
Suddenly, she caught her reflection in the mirror. She paused, her eyes resting on the scar that now permanently marked her face. The strange crescent stain that Kimmoto’s darkness had left on her. She looked away, quickly slipping on her shoes before exiting the bedroom.
Haku cursed, pushing several buttons in unison as he gripped the controls.
“Damn it! We’re losing speed! Zeph, get the after burners going! That freakin’ warp gate is trying to pull us in!”
Haku shouted, frustration burning in his words. Zeph didn’t question his orders, quickly opening a small compartment and pulling a lever up.
The two were so focused they didn’t notice the door slide open as Yuri walked in.
“Zeph, I need those after burners on full capacity, NOW!”
Haku snapped as he violently veered the ship to the left, trying to brake away from the pull. Yuri grabbed onto the back of one of the seats to keep from falling,
“What’s going on?”
She asked, her voice weaker than usual. Haku turned,
“Yuri?” he asked. The ship rocked roughly, and he remembered the problem that was at hand and looked away.
“Yuri, buckle up! We tried to avoid an asteroid field and somehow ended up in the pull of a warp gate. I’m not in the mood for exploring some new portal, and we really don’t have to time to get sucked into one at the moment either!”
He explained. Yuri stepped around, sitting and buckling as the ship rocked to the right, a grinding sound echoing through the room. She grimaced, but kept silent as Haku and Zeph worked desperately to keep from getting pulled in. The lights flickered, and Yuri began to worry.
“Uh…guys.”
“Not now.” Haku said as he pulled several levers and began to furiously push buttons. The ship gave a jerk to the right, shaking the entire cockpit. Yuri tensed, the roaring sounds growing louder now. The lights flickered off and on multiple times, then everything went quiet and still.
Zeph paused, slowing looking up.
“What happened?”
He asked. Haku was still, trying to answer this question himself.
Suddenly, the lights flickered, the roaring exploded into their minds as the ship barrel rolled sadistically to the right, spinning and turning over and over again. Haku gritted his teeth,
“Everyone, hang on!”
He shouted, his voice barely audible over the roar. The lights flickered once more, and then went out, tossing them into darkness.
