Comfortable Silence: Part Two |

"You're not a talker, are you?" Rina was the first to break the silence in the car as Joel silently toured her around town. He wondered what was exactly on her mind when she asked him for a tour of the small town instead of going back to school; a tour of Floodly, Washington would barely last an hour. "I just never really thought my life was that interesting" He responded somberly. He wished he could contribute more to the bare-bones conversation.
"Could I ask questions, then?" Rina showed a genuine interest in Joel's life "Sure" "What's your name?" "Joel Hayes" "Parents?" "Yes" "Divorced?" "No" "Hobbies?" "Yes" "Care to elaborate?" "Making movies, playing games, reading books...the big three" "Friends?" "Not really" "Why?" "Because" The questions stopped there and silence followed until Joel finally blurted out "What did you really want to do?" "Huh?" "I mean, you've already seen the entire town, a tour of Floodly can't take up an entire afternoon. So what else were you planning?" "Just keep driving" Silence followed the rest of the car ride to an unknown destination. Most of the time, Rina looked out at the rolling landscape and dreary clouds over head, but at certain points her eyes would flow over Joel's features. Joel wasn't great looking, but he wasn't hard on the eyes. His pale, bony face told Rina that he never left the house much, preferring to stay indoors in the cool arms of his basement. His moutn was thin and light pink, never straying from the default position of a straight line. His eyes were a dead giveaway to all of his emotions, though. The striking green eyes offset is otherwise bland coloring and it wasn't uncommon for his classmates to get lost in them were their eyes to stray off in the classroom. If Joel was mute, though, his eyes could allow him to communicate with anybody. The large, deepset eyes drew attention away from his small mouth and nose. Right now, his eyes were extremely large; hinting at unease and vulnerability. Joel's eyes were so striking that Rina forgot to notice the rest of his body. His black t-shirt perfectly matched his stark black hair that led down to just below his eyebrows. He didn't care to tame his hair every morning, but instead towel-dried it and headed out the door with never seeing a mirror; leaving his hair to take on either a wind-swept style or "bedhead". Today, his hair was windswept. His pale arms weren't necessarily strong, Joel had never lifted a weight in his life, but they took on the stringy muscle tissue of a devout runner that many people envied. His chest did not show underneath his shirt, it was much to large for his body even though he stood at a modest 6'4. Joel was good-looking, something he would never admit to. As he walked in the halls of his school, either he accepted it or not, he turned heads, heads which mostly belonged to women. Joel felt her eyes on him and he was beginning to feel slightly embarrassed. "What?" He sounded angry, but his eyes said he was far from that. "Nothing!" Rina had no idea Joel had felt her stare. She turned back to the road, blood rushing through her cheeks.
