"Go away." The young woman glared over at the young man that tagged alongside her. "What did I ever do to you, Mercia?" He huffed as Mercia continued to walk. She simply glared harder. "It's what you didn't do, Ben!" Ben sighed, she was still mad about class earlier on that day. He'd abandoned her during the partner lab in their science class to go work with one of the class bimbos in hopes of maybe getting somewhere with it. It had failed spectacularly and instead he wound up doing the entire lab himself, same as Mercia had to do hers by herself. Which Mercia didn't really mind since the lab was an easy one but that still didn't mean that she couldn't be mad. "Look, I said I was sorry." He laughed a bit to himself. "You'd think I'd learn by now, huh?" He smirked a bit, pushing his glasses back up onto the bridge of his nose. Mercia scoffed a bit, trying to hide her amusement. "Yeah, you would think." Ben shrugged his shoulders and saw that they were coming up on Mercia's house. "Alright, well I'll see you tomorrow." He waved at her as he darted across the street "I promise I'll help out next time!" He shouted to her once he made it across. "Yeah, yeah..." Mercia waved back and headed up the walkway, She dropped her stuff next to the door as soon as she was inside and headed straight for the kitchen where her mother was cooking as usual. "Hello, sweetie," Her mother gave her one of her sugary sweet smiles. "How was school today?" Mercia shrugged her shoulders as she grabbed a cutting board, knife, and some green onions. "It was okay. We had a lab today and Ben learned to stay away from those that are... "Interested" in having him as a partner." "That Jasmine girl got him to do the work again, huh?" Her mother laughed a bit as she scraped the chopped tomatoes into a pan. "As usual." Mercia started chopping onions. The front door opened and shut again and Mercia's father joined them in the kitchen, grabbing a soda from the fridge. Her mother smiled and turned around to give him a hug and a kiss. Mercia kept her eyes on the counter. She made it a point not to watch her parents do their lovey-dovey stuff. "How was your day, Sven?" Laisia asked in a loving tone as she turned back to her spot at the stove top. Sven worked in a small, privately owned shipyard. He always took the graveyard and afternoon shift, only having about 4 hours of downtime between the two. "Ah... It was fine," He opened the soda and gulped about half of it down. "A couple of the guys were being idiots though, Steve about got himself dragged off the docks by stepping through the lines... again." He sighed at the man's incompetence. "I swear the man has death wish." Mercia leaned over her mother's shoulder to scrape in the onions. "Alright, Well I'll be upstairs." She grabbed her book bag and headed upstairs. "Oh I see how it is," Laisia yelled up after her jokingly. "Leave the old woman to all the work, thanks a lot!" "Love you too. Mom" Mercia shouted back before heading into her room to work on her essay. "How do I love Government?" She sighed as she sat at her desk. "Oh let me count the ways... Could it be your agonizingly thick textbook?" She pulled the book out of her bag and dropped it on her desk with a solid thud. "Or maybe your complicated essays?" She took the topic sheet out of the front cover and looked them over. "Boy oh boy I just can't decide." She said in a dry tone. The night went on pretty slowly as it usually does, speeding up around dinner and showers. Sven left for his night shift as Mercia and Laisia readied for bed. Mercia lied in her bed, wide-awake. The past few nights had been like this, she would be totally wiped from the day but when it came time for bed she couldn't get but maybe an hour in. She'd been wondering whether she should tell her parents or not since, as far as she knew, insomnia was not a common family trait. Mercia sighed and opened her window to let in the cool autumn breeze. It was a welcoming chill as Mercia's body temperature spiked for a few moments, leaving her thirsty and nauseated. "What the hell?" She grumbled at the sudden flare. "I knew I couldn't sleep but... A fever now too?" She headed downstairs to get some ice water, hoping that would cool her down. Four glasses of water and nothing had happened except that she had successfully drenched the shoulder of her pajama top when she started to chug the water down.
