I can never watch till the end All Hell Breaks Loose, the episode where Prue dies. I watched it a few times, for the sake of continuity, but after Piper gets shot I immediately change the DVD over to the first episode of the fourth season, it is less painful for me, as I have loved Prue's strong and proud character and it really saddens me to see her go. Shannen Doherty directed this episode, as her fair-well to the beautiful world of Charmed.
So on to Charmed Again and the arrival of the young, sweet and strong Paige Matthews, the little girl that the three sisters didn't know existed until now.
Paige is a social worker, with a strong personality and a sweet face. She has the Halliwell genes in her, hence she's clever, funny, a quick learner, a natural talent for magic and a love to save innocents and the whole world if she's asked to do so.
We first meet her at her office. The first word she utters is ''Printing'' and she says it with an assertive note, like she wants to say ''I'm printing now, don't you dare touching that printer!" While at work she finds a paper announcing the funeral of Prue Halliwell and with no second thought she puts her jacket on and leaves work to go to the service. When she gives her condolences to Phoebe, her sister-to-be feels the familiarity and asks her if they've met before. But of course Paige knows all about the sisters, as she was an adopted child and when her adopted parents died, she started searching for her real parents. The clues took her closer to the Halliwells and she started frequenting P3, Piper's club.
While Phoebe was shaking her hand, at Prue's service, she had a horrible premonition about Paige: Shax, Prue's killer, was attacking her. Immediately after the service, Phoebe, Leo and Cole discuss, to Piper's dismay, a way to save Paige. Phoebe and Cole go near the place of the attack, while Leo goes ''up there'' to consult the Elders and Piper has a visit from her grandmother's ghost, telling her that ''her destiny still awaits'' her. Phoebe and Cole watch Shax approaching Paige and when he attacks her with a fireball, Paige orbs! Back at the Manor, Cole reveals that The Source thinks that Paige is the one to help the Charmed Ones reconstitute and Piper gets the hint, remembering Gramms's words.
They all go up in the Attic and summon Gramms. Gramms tries to lie to them, that she doesn't know anything but finally caves and reveals that she was keeping a big secret all those years. Their mother appears and confess that she had been pregnant by her Whitelighter, Sam and basically conclude that Paige is their little sister, a Charmed One, as soon as they stand by the Book. A very touching and simultaneously hilarious scene...
Paige arrives at the Manor, to thank Phoebe and Cole who came to her rescue, just as Pheobe and Piper were going to look for her. As soon as the three of them sit underneath the chandelier, and therefore underneath the Attic and the Book, the Charmed Ones are reconstituted again!!
The new Charmed Ones run to the Attic because all of a sudden, Shax appears to finish them off. Piper and Phoebe ask Paige to chant a spell with them, and to her astonishment, as soon as they do Shax is finally killed. However, Phoebe says that Shax was just the messenger and that they need to get to The Source. ''The Source of what?'' asks a terrified Paige and when the reply ''of all evil'' comes from Piper, Paige storms out of the room, angry that the sisters have turned her into a witch.
The two sisters look for their youngest one in the church where she was left as a baby and finally persuade her that she is not only a witch, but a Charmed One too, with amazing powers. Paige, as shown at the top picture, ''orbs'' a candle on to her hand and the magical journey for her and the new Charmed Ones begins once more, for another five years...
Although I love Prue, Paige brings another dimension to the sisterhood and the...Charmedhood. She is mischievous at the start, reminding us of a younger Phoebe, eager to learn and do all the tricks in and outside the book, and slowly becomes powerful, wise (she even becomes Headmaster at Magic School), mature, inventive, a true Halliwell witch. She has the extra advantage of orbing, which comes from her whitelighter side, which often saves the sisters in myriads of situations. She embraces her whitelighter side at the very end of the series, which makes her the most magical creature of the series.
Paige is a sensitive human being, who loves and is loved by many, but most importantly by her two sisters, as the become stronger and stronger as they Charmed Ones.
