It was the year of 1935. The Germans were taking over. Jews were being send to concentration camps all over. No Jew was safe. Many smaller towns hadn't yet been affected and strongly didn't believe what was going on. No one would listen to those that warned them. Though some families did believe what the other men and women from other towns and small cities were saying. Some families skipped town before it go to bad. Other went into hiding.
For young Emily her mother and older brother believed the rumors and wanted to leave but her father would not allow it. He didn't believe any of the rumors that were going around and wasn't about to let his family fall apart over something that seemed so stupid in his opinion. Emily's father, Adam, was a hard working man and was very wealthy. He owned his own business and could work from home if he pleased. He was a great provider for his family, what ever they wanted they got.
It was now 1936, a year had passed. All was calm for a while. Her parents never discussed leaving the country once her father told them nothing would make him want to start over. Adam, Emily's father was on of many men taken to Sachsenhausen concentration camp.
Emily was sixteen now. She was so looking forward to her sixteenth birthday before everything seemed to go horribly wrong. The rest of her family and her had gone into hiding at their father old business. They hid in a secret basement with a years supply of food. A year had passed and every day Emily and her mother prayed that thing would get better but things only seemed to get worse. A few weeks before Emily's seventeenth birthday they were captured but Nazis and sent to Buchenwald, a new concentration camp. Emily was separated from her brother and mother. She was sent to were all of the teen age women were sent. Her mother, Emily soon found out, was killed instantly and her brother was on the male side of the concentration camp and she would only see him again if the Germans didn't kill them and they were able to survive the labor the Germans put them through.
