Fighting for True Freedom, to be myself
A Girl Named Bird

As this title suggests, this is about a girl named Bird. Her name had been a total mistake; her mother had been delusional when she had Bird, and just gave her the name of the first thing she saw. Little did they know that Bird’s name fit her all too well. Well, truthfully, it was more like caged bird, for she had never been able to fully spread her wings; despite the fact that she tried her best at almost everything she had ever done.

It had been 13 years since Bird had come into the world, and she had gotten into her second year of middle school. She had light brown hair; quite often mistaken as a blonde, which went to the middle of her back, with the iciest hazel eyes anyone had ever seen. She was around five feet, matching most of the heights of regular girls in her school. But Bird was not what quite a few people would call 'regular' or even 'normal'; she had... thoughts... about committing suicide. She had them since the beginning of her 5th grade. She knew it wasn’t healthy, but kept it a secret from all but her closest friends, those who she could trust with her life. It had been her friends that had kept her alive so far; and she would not dare crumble and have her friends have to go to her funeral.

It was now springtime, and everyone around her was happy, walking down the hallways leading to their individual, at least two out of every five people holding hands; well except for Bird herself. Bird had always been alone, well except for her friends, but boyfriend meaning. She had a tendency to scare guys, she wasn’t afraid to get violent, something she had developed to try and keep names off of her, but not prevailing might I add. She kept her head down, knowing that it was just another day to trudge through, just like the rest of her life.

She was considered smart, but she never had the chance to shine, having not being the most favorite student among her teachers, she was not the worst either though. One thing that they hated about her is that she almost always had her nose in a book, almost always fantasy. She had a reason for reading this type of book and this type only. You see, she had lost all hope of finding that one perfect someone, her knight in shining armor, that one person that would sweep her off her feet, the person that every girl dreams of finding; and doing so, she locked herself in the world of words.

She also spent a lot of time ditching, she would hide away in the bathrooms, most of the time, crying. She had taught herself to let her tears fall silently so that she would not be discovered. But when she went home, she could no longer hide. So she put on a fake mask that she 'kept on the door' meaning that as soon as she stepped through that doorway, she was not the depressed, tearstained, Bird that she was at school. Of course, that was only until she was alone, then she threw off her mask and locked her self away in a world where only music and drawing existed.

But today had been different, today, she snapped. She broke down in tears during class, letting everyone in the room see her exposed, venerable. Now she was home, broken, and alone. She sat in a corner of her room, silently shaking, and attempting to hum and calm her nerves. She had tears streaming down her face. I can't take it anymore, I'm sorry that I had to come into your lives and give you memories of one who has no need to be remembered. And with that, she took a nearby light bulb, smashed it, and slit her throat. There was no screaming, there was no whimpering. She was silent save for her last, painful breaths. She sat there unmoving except for her left over tears and moving chest. Then she did something that she had not done for real in years... she smiled. It was a real smile, not a fake one that she showed to those around her. And with that smile lingering on her face, she closed her eyes, heaving her last, and final breath. The last thing she gave to the world she once knew was a smile.

That day at her funeral, it rained. It seemed that she sky had been trying to show the world the tears that Bird had hidden from the world when she had been alive. But halfway through, the rain halted and the sun broke through the clouds, showering the grieving people its bright rays. After the sun had shown itself, a dove flew down from the sky, landing on the casket that held the previously alive Bird. After that, some had no clue what had truly happened, some say that a figure had drifted through the top of the casket, looking like the deceased Bird. It had wings, but they were torn and gray. But, when the dove touched it with its own wing, the figure's wings became white, almost shining, and set off an aura of happiness. Then the figure sent the ones who saw, a smile. Not a fake, cheesy, smile; but a genuine one of pure happiness. Then it leapt into the air and said in an echoing voice, "Thank you for being there." Then took off into the clouds. Those who did not see that scene said that the bird landed on the casket, pecked at it once, and then took off.
With that, I left Bird’s funeral, knowing that she had gone to a better place. And with these words, I wished a better life there then she could ever have on this Earth, Fly high, Bird, Fly to your fullest heights, and when someone tells you that you can’t go higher, ignore them and keep going. Fly past the stars, past the moon, and farther into infinity.
