Week Thirty-Two: Love is in the Air This has been a fun week at Gaia. Fun, but crazy, crazy busy. It's raining here in the Bay Area, so even though I have a snazzy new window seat here at Gaia HQ, all I get to look forward to is a moist, gray haze for a few days gonk Love? I Hate Love! The Valentine's Day event is coming - just in case anybody missed the giant, well-armed baby that now decorates the Gaia header. I just finished coding the Valentine's Day event (so yes, it will probably destroy the site, yadda yadda yadda) and I think this will be one of the funnest and funniest Valentine's Days yet. Much thanks goes to all the devs and admins at Gaia who have run past events who taught me about how events work, gave me tips on how to run them smoothly, and dealt with my general incompetence. No Rest For the Weary So you know how I keep saying that the devs work hard? Well even before I was done with the Valentine's Day Event, I was already working on 2 other projects (and had a higher-up ask me to work on a third). Not to mention that there's a minor bug in Daily Chance (where it hangs on the "Games" page once in a while) that needs to be looked at, and as I code the Valentine's Day event, I'm writing a running list of enhancements to our event backend to make it easier to write/run future events. We were talking yesterday about how to be a good dev you have to be two things: 1. Dumb 2. Lazy Lazy because you try to code things to save you work in the future. Dumb because you basically end up creating tools that replace the need for you to work rofl Unfortunately, this is one of those jokes only devs are allowed to make -- if you call us dumb and lazy we'll switch off your intarwebz. What's black and white and red all over? This week we released hints for the MC's, which is something we also did last month. There are also 3 MC's, which is something I guess we're only doing occasionally. I personally think they're brilliant and it was one of the highlights of my week to see Gaians struggle to figure out what they could possibly be. I've heard some users say, "Thas stoopid now evry1 will kno wut they r!" but I haven't seen anybody figure out what the MC's really are yet. Personally I'd be glad if this became a Gaian tradition, because I think it's hilarious and fun. Heydays One thing that many Gaia employee talks about is how this is very simply the greatest place any of us has ever worked before. Not saying it doesn't need work - it needs a lot of work - but there are few places that allow so much input and creativity from everyone on the staff. I know that when I'm an old man, working at some database management company, I'll look over my cheese sandwich at the soulless code-monkey moving robotically through his miserable last years as he hopefully awaits death, and remember back to the times when I was young, happy, and a dev at Gaia.

	Your piccy of the "well armed baby" made me laugh for almost five minutes. But I had to pause and think, "oh god... that's a dangerous man." I am looking forward to the V-Day event too! Woot! 	Yay. Good job, Fleep. Im curious about the valentines day event, last year I wasnt into gaia so much, so I missed out on the event, and there wasn't a year before that cause I joined in march. 	You know, it is ironically funny that you used a horrible car crash to show your view on past events. On one hand, it made me laugh very loudly. On the other, I realized that it means you see them as being total mayhem. I hope no one was hurt. neutral I'm loving the MC hints, and hope they become a tradition. It's fun for all, and frustration for most! blaugh The pitched battles over what the hints mean are so cute! Don't worry though Fleep. If you break the site, there will be plenty of well prepared image macros and threads planning your crucifixion waiting when everything is up and running again. 3nodding EDIT: What would happen if someone guessed right? 	I hope you didn't just cancel out the possibility of the CN Scarf's blue counterpart coming out this month <_<;; We kinda needed the rain btw, global warming and such, ya know? sweatdrop And do you know something that we don't? 	How could you hate the rainy skies outside? Its so serene and calming to hear the rain on a window. Haha. I just noticed that Cupid has a really bad haircut. Maybe he lost a bet with the other gods? I bet so. I'm curious as to which of the higher ups asked you to work on a 3rd project, too. I guess everyone in the GCD has been wrong about the items this month then. Some of the clues were pretty simple to figure out, but then again, judging by your post, I guess not. D: And to close, who says Gaia won't be around for a long long time and you wouldn't have to be working in some data entry job.
