If it looks like I'm laughing I'm really just asking to leave.
‘It’s to cold to go outside;’
They said, wrapping us in blankets.
They hustle and bustle while together we both lied,
Exchanging mischievous grins like trinkets.
Later that night when they thought us asleep,
We opened our doors and met in the hallway connecting our doors.
Holding our hands we both began to creep,
Stepping over every creak in the old wooden floors,
Until together we reached the first landing with a leap,
And skittered to the outside door.
Not bothering with our boots or our jackets,
We flung open the door and ran outside in the cold.
You cough wasn’t bad,
We didn’t think much,
We just enjoyed it until we collapsed.
I still remember,
That was our last December.
Not the toys or the gifts or the holiday doves
Could ever replace our winter like love,
Or that I still get up on cold winter nights and creep to the door
Open it and listen to your echoed laughter in the snow.
