Chapter One.
The darkness was eearily silent. The lack of air outside caused any sound outside to be lost, sucked into the endless void of space. It was peaceful yet deadly. The large eye of Jupiter stares me . Everything inside was quiet as well. Only the dull drone of the A&G systems, and the occasional click from the heater disturbs the peace.
Im suppose to be sleeping, capitans orders, but Im on edge. Sleep will not come. Im eager, desperate for something to happen. So now I stand here, just staring blankly out the small port window in my quarters. I sigh and turn around throwing the small blanket i had wrapped around me onto my bed.
Maybe Dr. Obie can give me something to cure what ales me.She always had a bottle of something stashed away in the infarmary somewhere.
As I move towards the door the motion sensors catch me and it opens with an electonic sucking of air.
I step out into the hallway. Its a lot brighter and about ten degrees cooler. The temprature change causes me to shiver. The dull metallic hum is louder out here, but only shightly. At this point of the time cycle no one is awake, making it all the more quiet. I can hear the swooshing of my pants against the shinny silver floor.
When I make the short walk to the end of the hallway I press the small red down button on the elevator. The door opens almost immedately.
I step onto the elevator and press the button for the next floor down. Sure, I could have taken the stairs, but Im lazy.
The elevator makes a slight ding, and comes to an easy stop at the infarmary.
The door opens quietly and I walk silently through the infirmary. The lights are dimmed down and the deep maroon carpet is warmer on my bare feet than the cold metal of the elevtor. Empty beds line the walls with lots of advanced looking equipment next to each. My usual bed is the third one from the back wall, and Jeans bed is next to mine.
Its been a while since weve had any good raids, so theres no one in here. Past the beds are the pharmacy, opperation rooms and morgue. I dont go that way tough, I left and head to Dr. Obies office.
The door is open. I peak in, shes not in there. I hear moviment in one of the examination rooms down the hallway. I turn towards the noise and see a light on in the third examination room. I walk down and see Obie standing on a stool pulling something out of the top of a cabinet. It was a clear liquid in a familiar looking bottle. I smile. She jumps down from the stool and turns smiling wide at me.
I heard the elevator chime from my office, I figured it was either you or the capitan Janetta Obie spoke softly. She was extreamly well spoken, way more so than myself. She had a good expensive education in something that was being wasted in her current profession. I always wondered what had happened in the past that caused her to be forced to treat wounded or sick pirates, but I never asked. It was none of my business, and she seemed happy with what she was doing. As my grandmother use to say, if the cats not dead, theres no reason to resurect it.
You act as if this is an every day occurence I said defensively qs she turned of the light adn walkd back out into the main hall. Im tired, so my french/cajun accent was thicker than I ment for it to be. I wondered for a brief momemnt if she understood me.
Apprently she did, If its not one its the other. If we dont have another good plunder soon, my supply is going to go dry and I will have to resort to making my own. That would not be good
Yes, Id rather not go blind... I say following her into the main room with all the comfortable hospital beds. I take a seat on one as she goes to another cabinet and pulls out two small lab beakers.
She sits on the same bed as I and hands me one of the beakers. I absently look at the inside making sure there is no leftover lab resudue. These glasses are most likel cleaner than the ones in the mess hall however.
She pops open the top of the bottle and motions for me to hold out my glass. As I do she pours a subatantial ammount of the clear brown liquid in my glass, then into her own.
What would Ghede do if he knew I was contributing to the corruption of his favorite pilot? She said smiling. She holds out her glass for a cheers, To midnight rendezvous... I hit my class against hers and it makes a high pitched note, then throw back its entire contents. I cringe as the sweet yet hot liquid goes down the back of my throat. Whisky, a very hard find now days. She must have had this stashed away for quite a while.
Ghedes favorite my arse... I say into my empty glass making sure there was nothing left for me to consume.
She snickers, You are you know! She drank the last of her own drink, Ive never seen him go so easy on one of his pilots, he killed the last one you know?
I roll my eyes, So Ive heard.... I say nonchalantly. I hold out my glass for some more drinkie drinkie.
She pours me more, then a bit more for herself then sits the bottle down mext to her, resting against her thigh on the bed.
I had always been jealous of her. I may be Ghedes favorite pilot, but Janetta was his favorite, well, favorite friend. Dont get me wrong, I love the woman to death, shes like the mother I never had, but shes everything Im not. Tall, blonde, smart, beautiful...
I, on the other hand, was from the darker side of the gene pool. My mother was french and hatian, giving me a dark complexion and thick wavy black hair. My father, was a mutt, apprently thats where I get my green eyes from, my best feature I think.
I dont remember much of either of them. I only know what my grandmother has told me. Both of them dissappeared. When all of the people initially started of mysteriously vanish, they sent me and my brother with my grandmother off planet. They stayed behind, only having enough money to send us off planet. They were suppose to follow, but never arrived.
Theres a sudden beeping noise followed by a brittish accent, Janetta, is Garnet down there with you!?
Her eyes get wide, its Ghede she shakes her head and puts a finger on her lips telling me to be quite, No Ghede, shes not, have you checked with her brother.
Bullshit... He says, Garnet get your a** to the bridge.
Yesir I say taking the last shot of my drink and sitting it on a table next to the bed, Thanks Janie I say using my nickname for her.
She smiles, See you tommorow? She makes it a question.
I wink, of course.
