So I've been working for the last week on my first ever project here at Gaia. This is not the "pee your pants" feature I mentioned last week (though it may make you trickle a little). The code that powers Gaia is pretty immense, and what's better (or worse, if you have to deal with it) is it's evolving. It's kind of like Pokemon, except good.
Admins Don't Hate You... Much
There was a little bit of commotion on GCD about the new announcement system, and about how admins are interacting less directly with users. I gave an answer why, but it'd be much faster to read what Ling has to say about it.
So coding is the common theme in this journal, and that's true of the admin issue as well. Gaia is a massive beast, and the bigger it gets, the more likely it is to bite the hands that feed it (in this case I'm referring to us over here at Gaia HQ).
So to tame the beast, we have to throw more handlers at it. We have one of those guys with the chairs and the whips, and a guy with a lasso, but it takes a lot of people to keep Gaia in check. Any feature you see on the site takes a lot of coding and testing.
Yawn... So What?
What's the point? When I came on board, I asked Lanzer if it was okay to run this journal. His first response was "Who are you? What are you doing in my bedroom?!"
After the tranquilizer kicked in, I asked him again if I could write the journal. He encourages admins to interact with users. You're important to Gaia, and all that Gaia is is a bunch of people who want to make a great community and make cool features that you guys like.
Project Fun
A bunch of people are involved in different exciting projects. I wish I could tell you what they were, because a lot of them are really sweet, but I'm pretty sure I would end up at the bottom of a river if I did.
Everyone's abuzz with different things and it's interesting to hear people innovating and trying to plan features that are feasible to build, but also ideal for making Gaia more amazing. There are a few people geared towards fixing things that are broken (like layout problems), which a few of you will be happy to hear. There are some who want to give you more things to do while on Gaia. And there are a few people who are working on features you've been waiting a long time for.
Fun-inspired
There are so many different people here and they all have different ideas about how to approach a problem. With one project I was on, we sat down and sketched out how users would be using our feature, ideally -- then we created a model for the system that would enable that.
Some people have an image that they want to project. Just today, someone approached me with this really cool book with some edgy art in it - he was suggesting that we use that as inspiration for one of our projects.
Some people sit around in a circle and argue all day pirate
Either way, now that we're getting a little more organized you should see some solid fun features coming your way in coming months. Keep your eyes peeled! xd

o.O;; Poor Lanzer. x3
Er...sounds like...fun? As much as I would love to work at Gaia but, programming and coding and all that make my brain ache.
Edit: Ha! First comment. <3
