“She still needs a bit more work,” the blonde woman with the tablet said, looking over to the other scientists.
“It never ends,” a man sighed, lifting his head up from the computer screen. “With the amount of money, time and resources we’ve used on this project you’ll think we would’ve gotten closer to the goal by now.”
“Taking a human mind and putting it into something that isn’t it’s original body isn’t going to be an easy adjustment for the subject.”
“Of course not. They either have an psychotic break at being told the truth, which usually ends up with them killing themselves or they figured it out and become self-aware with a severe case of dissociation. Sometimes it includes a bit of craziness, believing themselves to be the next step for the human race. There’s a word for it, I think...”
“Transhumanism.”
“That’s it.”
“It’s technically true though,” another woman said, taking a slip of her warm coffee.
“Yeah, but I was expecting the subject to continue learning and growing so that it could ‘enlighten’ others to a possible new era or something. Not automatically appoint themselves as a God and try to take control of the whole world. They were pretty set in forcing what has been done to them upon the rest of the human race.”
“I told George that we shouldn’t have rush the subject into accepting that philosophy without first making sure that they were grounded,” she said, placing her mug down. “He was convince that they needed something to look forward to. But none of that matters now. So far each attempt has gotten us closer, but now we’re stuck in a loop.”
The woman with the tablet sat down, placing it onto her desk. “Eva is the only subject to actually reach a point where we’ve thought was impossible to achieve. But the problem is the lack of freewill. If we can somehow get her to break her programming and actually improvise without relying on the sophisticated algorithm prediction program, she’ll almost be human.”
“And how would we do that?” the man asked, raising his eyebrow.
“There’s only so much that we can do with simulations and tests for. She needs actual real-world experience in order to grow and learn from. And for us to detect what works and what doesn’t.”
“That’s a pretty big risk to take if something goes wrong.”
“Not as long as we continue to test her and prepare her for the real world. Even put in some fail-safes to insure that nothing goes wrong and if it does we’ll be ready for it.”
“It may very well be what needs to done to finally get a breakthrough,” the coffee woman said, spinning in her chair. “You can't achieve greatness without taking a leap of faith once in a while.”
