I got my wish about Yama coming, but I almost wish I hadn't. No, it's better this way, even though it means the end for me...at least I know the truth.
On the solstice, I went for a morning walk around the plaza while Angel, as usual, slept in. Who did I see sitting at a cafe table? Yama! Or rather, Bobcat Blackie, as he calls himself now... After we sat and talked for a while, he jumped up, said, "There's our contact," and led me off on a merry chase after an elfin little man who he said had worked for G-Corp. Apparently Yama had been looking for someone who knew about me, and had come to the Isle to talk to this man.
The merry chase ended in a dingy dead-end alley, containing only a dumpster and a block of concrete, on which the little man sat, waiting. As I caught my breath, I studied the man. Then, feeling silly, I asked if he had worked for G-Corp. He had, and had been one of my...creators. He said that I should have been a superhuman, with much more strenth and speed then normal ones...but that my monster side had been an unexpected side effect. I kept pressing him for more, and as he looked around worriedly, he said that he had a disk with the data on me with him. But as he took it out of the pocket off his jacket, a loud bang rang out. My first, foolish, thought was "Who set off that firecracker?" Then, as I saw the little man crumple, I knew that it had been a shot.
Yama grabbed us both and shoved us behind the dumpster. He had drawn two pistols, like the one he had had in Durem, but diferent. He stood over us, scanning the alley for more trouble.
The little man, gasping for breath, shoved the little plastic envelope containing the disk at me. "Take this," he gasped. "Please...forgive me, my daughter..." As I knelt besid him, his eyes went glassy and I seemed to hear the rustling, whispering sound of wings. I knew it was too late for me to do anything, even as I said "Forgiven." and felt for a pulse. Pushing back the wave of grief that had inexplicably washed over me, I closed his eyes, whispering "May Eirmehz look after you," then slipped the disk into my own pocket. I couldn't panic or start crying now, or me and Yam would likely soon follow the little man to the underworld.
We needed a distraction. I gave the dumpster behind which I crouched a hard shove. For a moment it seemed as if I wasn't strong enough, then it tipped and fell on to its side, strewing rubbish everywhere and making a huge noise. "Come on, let's get out of here!" I yelled to Yama as I raced out of the alley.
We got to the main plaza unharmed. By this time it was noon, and since I didn't want Angel to come looking for me and possibly wander into danger, we arranged to meet that evening when she was doing one of her shows.
It was almost impossibly hard to not let Angel know how upset I was as we ate (or in my case picked on) brunch. It was a relief when it was over and Angel allowed me to use her computer. "Just don't put any viruses on it!" she yelled over her shoulder, going off to the casino.
The thought of viruses made me smile bitterly as I slipped the CD into the computer. Soon I wasn't smiling any more though...
The disk had clearly been made by someone who didn't know much about computers. All it contained was text and a few hard-to-read diagrams. But the contents were clear enough.
I am two-thirds human and a third...nevermind, I can't spell it, and the disk has the scientific name for the sea-people anyway. The sea-people, according to the disk, were a peaceful civilization that lived in the reefs around the Isle...untill the humans came. Then, poisoned by human waste, they began to die at an alarming speed. It was at this point that they were first discovered by Gambino (the disk dosn't say how) who learned to comunicate with them, and offered to use all of G-Corp's technology to save them...in exchage for thieir genes. Those genes were the ones that were used to create me. However, in combination with human ones, they behaved strangely, making a monster. In his rage, Gambino tried to kill the sea-people, but they escaped him, going to almost certain extinction. He wanted to kill me too, but the little scientist stopped him, found a way to make me at least seemingly human by a prototype carrier virus containing human DNA, and had me adopted by the people I always thought of as my family. However, Gambino made one thing clear: Should the secret ever get out, all concerned would be silenced for good. Now that crane falling dosn't seem like a freak accident. And the little scientist's death...
I met Yama again last night. We didn't say much, and I cried a lot, but it was clear to me what I have to do. It's a pity, of course, but I'm doing the only thing I can. The little scientist made the disk in the hope that it would be found if something happened to him. I leave this diary to accompany it. I know Yama, Angel, and Lady Luck will miss me, but if I live any longer, I'll put their lives in danger. I go to join my sea-people ancestors, in the deep sea off of the Isle... Keep seeking for answers, my friends! Bring this to the eyes of the world, then nobody will dare to harm you. I'll always be with you...remember that...
