Though it’s fun to think about zombie weapons and combat techniques, for most of us staying alive in a zombie outbreak it will come down to the basics of food, water and shelter. A simple and well established principle in disaster survival is the Rule of Threes, which holds that a person can live only so long without certain essentials:
Without air you’re dead in 3 minutes Without safe shelter you’re dead in 3 hours Without water you’re dead in 3 days Without food you’re dead in 3 weeks
Of course, if you live in a mild climate you may not need immediate protection from the elements, but you will always need protection from roaming zombies.
The Rule of Threes is an easy-to-remember checklist that will keep your priorities in order in any undead survival situation. You first need to breathe. Then you need to make sure you’re not going to freeze, burn or be eaten. Next is water, and finally you should locate food.
The Rule of Threes is just another clear connection between crisis preparedness and response strategies for more common man-made and natural disasters, and the measures needed to survive an infestation of the walking dead.
