Some of you are probably wondering why I haven’t been communicating or being active like I usually am on Tumblr. There’s a simple reason for that and that’s because a freaking virus infected my laptop. I have no clue where it came from but I learned a difficult and valuable lesson. No matter how safe and protected you think you are, there is danger everywhere.
The virus I got is known as System Repair. It pretends to be a diagnostic and repair program, and claims that several hard driver errors were detected on your computer. If you try to repair these hard drive issues, System Repair will state that you need to buy its full version before being able to do so. The virus will disabled the Windows system utilities, including the Windows Task Manager and Registry Editor, and will block you from running certain programs that could lead to its removal.
There are sites that provide instructions in how to remove and fix the damage that the virus will cause to your computer, but unfortunately it was too late for me to do that. I had to resort to wiping my laptop clean and now I face a new issue which is getting my hands on Windows 7 (especially one that works for my specific laptop which is difficult to find because it’s old). At this point it looks like I will be without a laptop/internet for a very long time. The only way I’m even writing this post and popping up on Tumblr is because I’m on my sister’s laptop.
From previous experience of dealing with computers, such as them crashing, I have learned to always backup important documents, photos, and whatever else that I wish to keep safe. However, there are times that I slack off and don’t do it as frequency as I should. This happen to be one of those times and of course I ended up losing some of my recent documents, photos, and songs. I’m grateful I didn’t lose everything but it’s going to be a pain in dealing with the loss of my laptop.
I’m writing this up to make sure people are aware that viruses can happen at anytime and at anywhere, even when you think you’re safe. It’s important that you expect the unexpected because it will help you to prepare when something does happen to your computer. You need to make sure that you have a plan for when that happens. You need to make sure that you will always back up your stuff and that you won’t slack off on doing it regularly. It is also important that you keep your laptop up-to-date. That it’s protected with trust-worthy antivirus/malware protection software and has firewalls software as well.
