What many people don’t realize is that they can learn many things from fiction. More importantly, you can learn how to protect yourself against the supernatural, such as ghosts, demons, aliens and other monsters. Here are some of the things that I’ve learned from TV shows, movies, and video games about ghosts. Bonus: Can you figure out where each of the information/reference comes from?
Ghosts:
Iron can repel spirits.
A ring of salt can protect you from them OR you can trap them in it.
Sage can purify a home from negative energy and spirits.
Get yourself a Camera Obscura which is capable of exorcising spirits.
Holy Candles/Purification Candles will repel all the ghosts in the area for a certain time.
To get rid a ghost permanently, you must purify and burn it’s corpse (or whatever object/items it’s attach to). To do that you must salt its bones (or the object) and burn it. This method is commonly known as a “salt and burn”.
Get yourself a pair of Spectral Viewers which are glasses that allow the wearer to see ghosts. It may not stop them from harming you but it is useful for when you want to keep track of them and can’t see where they are.
To get a ghost to move on you must help it fulfill its purpose. Be it that you helped bring justice to their death, pass on a message, let the world know what happen to them (give them the recognition they feel that they deserve), or give them a proper burial.
Ectobar glass is a highly strong, but not indestructible type of glass. It’s also shatterproof and soundproof. Combine with Latin spells written on them it can be use to contain ghosts or as a shield against them.
EMF (electromagnetic fields) meter is a tool used to look for spikes in electrical current in objects or in areas, which can indicate that there is a ghost around. Such a tool is base on the assumption that ghost contain some electrical residue that EMF meters would be able to detect their presence.
Digital voice recorders are use to capture EVP (electronic voice phenomenon) which are considered to be voices of the dead. The recorder picks up a voice or sound that can not be heard by human ears.
Ofuda is a talisman, which repels ghosts (also know as yūrei). It is made by inscribing the name of a kami and the name of the Shinto shrine or of a representative of the kami on a strip of paper, wood, cloth, or metal. It is sometimes hung in the house (above the doorway) for protection and keeping the ghost from entering. But when you have an actual problem with a ghost, then the ofuda must be place on the ghost’s forehead in order to banish them.
Get a Proton pack. It fires a positively charged steams of protons that attract the negatively charged energy of a ghost, allowing it to be held in the stream while active. The Proton pack doesn’t harm the ghost or repel it, it allows the user to position a ghost above a trap/container for capture.
Say a prayer for protection, especially before doing an investigation for the paranormal. Though it’s important that you believe in the prayer and that it has meaning to you, otherwise it’s not going to be very effective. You can use any prayer that’s about protection but most investigators use the St. Micheal prayer.
There’s a banishing a ghost for eternity potion. To use it, you need to make it and then poured it over the remains of the spirits’s body in order for it to work. The ingredients are a palmful of pomegranate seeds that are grounded into a fine paste, a pinch of comfry root, a pinch of blood meal, a pinch of clematis seed, a pinch of dried rhubarb leaf. Mix well, add a chalice of twice blessed water and boil.
Chung Kwei amulet is for protection, consisting of an image of Chung Kwei. He is famed as an exorcist and is very ominous towards evil spirits. Having this amulet protects you against demons, wandering spirits and intangible influences that don’t mean you well.
The Chinese consider Jade as a lucky stone and it repels evil spirits and demon.
If all else fails, you’ll have to call for professional help. Who to call? The Ghostbusters. Or you might get lucky and come across some Hunters.
Note: There is a part two called, What I’ve Learned - Demons
