Each author’s note is different, because no writers are the same. How I write a author’s note depends on what I want the readers to know and it’s always about or related to my story. If the author’s note is set before the beginning of the story I basically tell them what to expect from it.
For example: If it’s a rated “M” story I tell them that there’s no sex but mature content like violence, explicit language or whatnot. The author’s note is basically a way to warn readers what the story contains (or at least what the chapter will have). So that would be a good time to tell them what the pairing is, if there’s any. If there’s slash/yaoi, shounen-ai, shoujo-ai, yuri, rape, gore, AU, OOC, Character Death, etc. Writers know that not everyone will be interested in reading about certain things.
After that, I tell them when I’ll updated the story, be it mostly on Saturdays or Fridays. Or that it will be every two weeks, at the end of the month, or maybe every Monday. Lastly, I tell them that if I take too long time to update than to check my profile for any announcements/messages of what’s going on with me. Doing so keeps me from accidentally bringing my readers’ hopes up when they get an email alert about my story being updated, when it was just an author’s note. Plus, having an author’s note as a chapter could be against the fanfiction site’s rules.
Sometimes the author’s note in the first chapter of the story might have a disclaimer. I like to do that only once and not post a disclaimer for every chapter since I find that to be an unnecessary waste of time. Doing it once should get the message clear that the characters, plot, etc. that belong to the official fictional work/original media isn’t mine. But so and so that isn’t apart of canon and is of my own creation is mine.
That’s how my author’s note in the first chapters of my stories are like. After that my authors’ notes are short and simple. They usually consist of me asking my readers their opinions, predictions, and advice. Or to let me know if there’s any mistakes because I'll appreciate any help I can get for catching what I missed or corrections for what I might’ve gotten wrong.
