Conventions: No Excuse For Ignorance |

If someone is going to write a report, or an article or whatever and cover a convention they must do their research! Plus they should be neutral about it because it’s highly unfair to hear someone’s ignorant opinion about conventions and the people who go to it. All they are doing is spreading a misconceptions to other people about those who go to conventions. Basically making it seem like those conventioneers are idiots and cowards who want to “escape reality and leave it to others to save the dark economy”.
Honesty I thought reporters were better then that. If it was just a random person making a comment like that then let them wallow in their ignorance. But for a reporter to think that way, it is inexcusable. They must get their facts straight because it’s their job to get things right and to make sure that people get the correct information.
Viewers of the show have to trust the reporters of those news stations to give them the truth and let them know what they need to know. So if the reporter is giving out ignorant information it’ll spread to the viewers who also don’t understand and they’ll think it is the truth.
I’m getting pissed off because of what that reporter is doing is bullying. Why did they have to focus on comic-con groupies? They aren’t to blame for the economy. Why can’t they be left alone to escape reality? They have a right to do so and they deserve it. Hell, they deserve it just as much as any other people who “escape reality”.
Those who go on vacations save up in order to go on a trip (that’s also escaping reality). People who go to conventions also save up year after year to go to Conventions. It’s their form of a vacation because they are leaving reality for one weekend. One weekend out of the entire year.
Just like any vacation it also costs a lot of money. Honesty, it’s not that different. Hell, for some conventioneers it’s a hobby for them. Whether the reason is just to go and enjoy it, meet the celebrities, or to cosplay or maybe do all of it. But either way the people who go to conventions aren’t all geeks or weirdos.
They are all normal people with jobs, who go to school and so on (if people stereotypes us all as pimple-faced, fat, glasses wearing nerds who love science, hate sports, are 44 and still living with parents then shame on you! There might be one or two like that but in reality they don’t make up the large numbers of those at conventions).
When you think about it how much do other people spend on holidays or hobbies a year? Hundreds? Thousands? How is that any different to people saving up their hard earned money to go away to a convention, to meet a lot of people, some celebrities and have a fun time while doing it?
How is that different to saving up hundreds or thousands to go away for a week or two, or to play golf every weekend, or get your hair done every month, your nails done twice a week. It’s not. There is no difference. So before anyone goes spouting crap about how stupid conventioneers are and their conventions they need to think of how many other people that are out there that do other things that are consider “stupid”, “pointless”, and/or “geeky”.
If someone is going to hate on something or the people there must be a valid reason! Better yet KNOW YOUR STUFF!
Also…how the hell is it the convention goers’ fault for “leaving it to others to save the dark economy”? It’s not their jobs to save the world because other people got themselves into debt and the banks kept giving out loans, etc. Besides they have been doing their part to help bring money into the economy for years, even before it. It cost money to stay at hotels, to use public transportation, or if they have a car they need to pay for more gas, to buy food to eat, to buy materials to cosplay and even the convention itself needs money to pay for whatever building they are renting.
Again, a lot of hard earn money is spent and it goes into people’s pay checks and companies make a profit from large events. To them it means more people to attract to their stores and buy their products, for people to get more tips when a group of con goers enter the restaurant, tips for those that stay in their hotels, and so on. It’s annoying when people think it’s so simple, stupid and that “money is wasted on nothing important” or whatever.
