Fan Community Nicknames is basically a nickname that’s given to the fans of whatever they are fans of (TV shows, books, video games, etc.). Sometimes they come up with their own nicknames, sometimes they are given it from observers and sometimes they are given a nickname from the TV shows (or whatever it is) actors/director, artist, author, creator, etc. themselves.
A good example that is well known would be Lady Gaga who affectionately named her fans, “Monsters” or “Little Monsters”. In return (it wasn’t until a fan who met her in Chicago, did she start using it herself) her fans started nicknaming her “Mother Monster”, and other variations such as, “Mommy Monster,” “Mama Monster”, and/or “Momma Monster”.
Here are a list of Fandom Nicknames:
Star Trek - Trekkie (but they prefer the term “Trekker”) Star Wars - Warsies (or Jedheads) Doctor Who - Whovian (or Wholigans which is an alternative and sometimes Whosiers) Dragon Ball - Dragonballers Mobile Suit Gundam - Gundamaniacs Suzumiya Haruhi - Haruhiist (or The S.O.S. Brigade) Axis Power Hetalia - Hetalians Fullmetal Alchemist -Miniskirt Army (and/or Risembool Rangers. Sometimes these two nicknames are used to refer to fans of Vic and Travis.) Sailor Moon - Moonies Naruto - Narutards (It’s derogatory but some fans don’t take offense while others do and majority prefer to be called just fans.) Kimagure Orange Road - Orange Roadies (or HardKOR fans) Bleach - Shinigamiphiles (or Bleachers) Tiger & Bunny - T&Bros Back to the Future - Backies Sherlock Holmes - Holmesians (Sherlockians and sometimes Baker Street Irregulars) The Phantom of the Opera - Phans Harry Potter - Potterites (Potterheads, Dumbledore’s Army or the D.A.) The Lord of the Rings - Ringers (or Tolkienites which also covers his other literature) Twilight - Twilighters (Twihards or twerds, and/or Team Jacob/Edward) The Dark Tower - Tower Junkies Babylon 5 - Babblers (or Fivers) Firefly - Browncoats (or Flans) Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Buffistas Stargate SG-1 & Stargate Atlantis - Gateheads Glee - Gleeks Farscape - Scaper True Blood - Trubies Torchwood - Woodies Xena: Warrior Princess - Xenites Gears of War - Gearheads Pokemon - Pokemaniacs Transformers - Transfans
Now, there’s still a lot of fandoms that fans haven’t been given a name yet and some are curious in how to come up with something. It all really depends on what the fandom is about and coming up with a name that relates to it (and something that can be used for all fans of it and not just a certain group of the fandom). Plus one has to make sure that the nickname they come up with isn’t already taken or can’t be confused with something else.
Supernatural - Saltgunners (or Rocksalters, or SnOb which stands for Supernaturally Obsessed or if they are fans of Misha Collins they call themselves Misha Minions)
Now, Saltgunners, Rocksalters and SnOb aren’t wide-known or official nicknames and some fans of the show disagree/don’t like those nicknames. Their reasoning is that Saltgunners and Rocksalters is only one tiny aspect of the show and doesn’t make a strong connection with the show.
I agree, they are only items/tools that are sometimes used and they aren’t a big part of the show. It’s not about those things but the characters, more specifically the main characters. SnOb is much more closer to the point but some fans don’t like that it could be mixed up as Snob. Another nickname for the fans that was suggested was SuperFreaks but that also might be confusing for people because they might think they are talking about the 1981 hit single song ‘Super Freak’ by Rick James.
Other suggestions were:
Renegades Roadies Hunters Supernaturians BitchJerk FreeWillers Superhunters Waywarders Waywarderies HellHounds HellHounders TruGhostfacers
Personally, I think before a few fans declare a nickname for all of the fans, they should think up as many nicknames as possible and then let it be known for the WHOLE fandom. That way, everyone gets a vote into picking something they like. After all, once a name is officially picked then it’ll start catching on and will be well known. So it should be something everyone or at least majority like and can live with.
