“…Mare…?” I whispered. I stared, horrified at what was in front of me. Mare was sprawled facedown on the grassless lawn in front of an old building that was abandoned a few years ago. She was motionless, and something was hunched over her. It was attached to her, making loud sucking noises. Mare kept getting paler and paler with each disgusting sound. I stood there, watching my best friend get eaten alive by some…monster. The monster lifted its head, red blood dripping from its lips and teeth. No, not teeth…fangs. Mare’s neck was shredded, but no blood was leaking from her. The monster’s blazing red eyes locked onto mine, and I realized what this thing was. It was a vampire, from the stories that Mother told when I was younger. It stared at me, it’s eyes blazing with hunger, but it turned tail and raced away with inhuman speed. I was scared, absolutely scared, but I forced my frozen muscles to move. My friend was lying on the ground, pale as snow. Her eyes were open, staring towards the sky but not seeing a thing. I cradled her head in my arms and begged her to wake up, but she never did. I was alone. I was scared. I was angry. But there wasn’t anything I could do. But I promised myself that I would find that beast, and kill it with my own two hands. Mare’s soul was leaving her already. Silvery smoke rose from her chest, spiraling towards the sky. It glittered in the setting sun, and disappeared in the darkening sky. My throat closed up, and I clenched my teeth together. A single tear rolled down my face, and fell on Mare’s cheek. My tear trailed down her own cheek and dropped on the dirt. I shook my head, not wanting to cry. I stood up, letting Mare’s wavy light brown hair fall through my fingers and fall on the ground. I backed away, trying not to remember when Mare was alive, knowing that it would make more tears fall. “Rest in peace, Mare.”
