[ history ]

Raised by a physicist and a chemist, it's really no surprise that Fritz developed a strong interest in all things scientific at a young age. While other kids were playing with toy cars and action figures, he was more likely to be seen with a telescope or chemistry set. That's not to say he was a genius- just that his interests radically differed from everyone else's. He saw beyond what lay directly before his eyes; he wanted to know what went on on microscopic levels and all the way out in other galaxies. He always did.

So when he and his mother and father left Earth when he was about eight years old, needless to say, he was ecstatic. Being that close to the stars! It was thrilling, really. So many questions to be asked and sights to see. Compared to the boring, provincial setting he was used to, this was pretty much heaven.

His life on the ship was just about what one would expect a quiet, modest, mild and frankly dorky guy like Fritz's to be. He was picked on plenty by the other boys his age. That's not to say he had absolutely no friends; he did- and his first boyfriend, actually, around the time he turned fourteen (this such boyfriend being the reason for his nickname "Fritz"- he said that the number of pieces of technology he'd seen malfunction in his lifetime doubled whenever Eckstein was around, probably because he'd been tampering with it). And he wasn't the sort to let the idiots get to him; he just kind of tuned them out and did his own thing. He worked painstakingly hard in school; nothing academic really came easily to him, but his interest mixed with his hard work had him acing pretty much everything.

He was the last guy anyone thought would join the armed forces. But, lo, when he turned eighteen, first thing he did was enlist. Of course, he had no intention of actually fighting, but he left that out- it seemed to keep pretty much any potential antagonists at bay, letting them think he'd be holding a gun, rather than a wrench and a handful of wires. He'd debated whether to go into training to be a paramedic or a communications tech; the latter won out, thanks to a lot of goading from his father, the physicist. He would've been happy with either, though, at the time, but now he's come to love his job.

When the opportunity arose for Fritz to head out on an exploration mission, breaking away from the Endeavor to investigate Terra, he was somewhat unsure as to what should be done. He'd never really considered actually venturing out and taking part of a mission that dangerous. But he finally resigned himself to going, reasoning that once he got on the ground it wouldn't be so bad, and he could be missing out on something amazing if he didn't get over his fears.
