Okay..I didn't intend to rant.. I was just helping a good friend (Myles) find something to rant about. But after reading his, I want to rant too! Haha.
We all know that stereotypes are common. I get them, you get them..we all get them.
Example: Stereotypes I've heard about me:
I'm black
I love fried chicken
I drink grape soda and kool-aid
I have family members that are in gangs
I'll beat the living day lights out of ya
Probably can't read
Bad grammar when speaking
REALITY CHECK!
*Hate fried chicken
*I can read..
*I like the color red..
*I don't choose my family
*I don't speak in broken grammar
*I can beat ya but I won't
If I were to guess on something...I'd say 79% of the world stereotype people wrongly. In my advise..people need to get to know the person. Now obviously..I get stereotyped..a lot. Even in elementary school. Stereotyping is so..gah...irritating to those you are targeting it with. I'll use a scenario to show you.
Science class..sometime in March..2010.
Imagine you are me in a table group and suddenly a guy says "Asians are always known for being prostitutes, isn't that right Bailey?" Now you have to know by know that Bailey..is in fact Asian. And since you are me, you are Asian as well..it's just nobody knows since you have already been labeled.. black chick. Would you stand up for Bailey or would you keep your mouth shut and end up beating the crap out of the guy..
That's who I felt..so I stood up for him..why? Because labeling Bailey as a prostitute for being Asian isn't right. Things like this makes me wonder if stereotypes..made the cliques..which made making friends...limited in schools.. Now if you aren't in school, then you may not think that but I do..I know..I'm in a clique that I didn't know about. We have your...
-Nerds
-Jocks
-Preps
-Emos
-Scenes
-Loners
-Freaks/Losers (Apparently that's the table I sit at and who I hang with)
-Sluts
Now isn't that making you think? Okay..so I've been sitting at the same table since I've came into middle school..why? Because I feel that I don't belong with any of the others. That's how I bet a lot of the kids at my school feel..probably the same with the other schools across the world.
Note to self..I think I'm getting off topic ><
Umm..where was I? Oh yes..
Now if you asked someone to stop slipping people into categories by what they look like or what they wear..maybe of how they down in school...then that would be hard. In my opinion it's probably because it's a habit that we just can let go of. Just like when you brush your teeth every morning and night, you are in a habit that you can't stop doing.
Well what I guess I'm trying to get my point to is that stereotyping may be fun, but next time you think of doing it..just realize what it's doing to your target..cause it can hurt them..and possibly you. Remember..karma is a b***h..it'll come back at ya.
