You dive for pearls, sponges and shellfish, right?
Of course, I do.
Then, did you see . . . any mermaids?
Mermaids? Unfortunately, I have not seen any during my dives. They do not like to go near the shallow waters that are occupied by men.
Why is that?
They are very unusual creatures that live deep in the oceans of the world. Not too much is known of these beings but they have spawned many legends. Some say that they either save men from drowning in the sea or they carry sailors away to their doom.
So . . . mermaids are either good or evil?
Yes, just like there are good and evil people in the world, there are good and evil mermaids who live in the waters of the world.
Are there any interesting legends about mermaids, Mother?
Indeed there are, many of which concern about their origins. Some say that they were a breed of fairy that can live and breathe underwater. Some say that they are the forms that represent the element of water in the world. Others believe that they can talk to the other sea creatures that inhabit the oceans. Nevertheless, the most famous tale about mermaids tell of their magical tears.
Their . . . tears?
You know of the pearls that are found in oysters, do you Argo? Well, legend has it, that when a mermaid sheds her tears, they form into a beautiful pearl which shames the pearls made by the oysters of the shores. These pearls can shine in the darkest of places, for they have magical luminescence that they have been granted by the mermaid who shed that tear. You see, Argo, mermaids have magical powers that can manipulate the tides of the sea and other supernatural qualities.
Oh, wow . . .
However, these tears have been sought by many, especially warlocks who desire their magical qualities. Long before our time, there was a great war between the magicians of humanity and the elemental spirits who inhabited the world. These magicians sought to rule over the dominion of man and magical creatures alike. However, the magicians failed to capture them and many were put into the everlasting sleep of death.
Are ther any wizards or witches left in the world?
No one knows for sure, Argo. Some say that they all died out or that there are a few people who know of their magical heritage. Now they have become the tales of myths and dreams, no longer living among the realm of man.
Mom, about the mermaids, what do you do for a mermaid when they save your life?
Hmm, I am not sure, nevertheless you must repay for that being for saving your life. Since mermaids are creatures who live in the sea, I think a gift that is from the surface world will satisfy them. Remember, they have tails and cannot walk on land. Maybe flowers or some fruit would suffice.
