Prologue:
Nightlights
Nightlights
The door opened slowly and silently as the silhouette of a dark figure walked past it. The figure walked past the door, closing it slowly and silently behind him to not make a sound, into a room that was uncomfortably large with the light coming through the windows that faced the door. The beautiful night-lights of San Francisco lit the room with a number of bight and dark colors.
The figure looked around the room. A large, rectangular desk had been place in the middle of the room, filled with food and drinks. Five windows were along the back wall, with one in the right corner. A desk was between the windows and the table. A computer and a few nick-knacks were on the table. Though the figure couldn’t see it, he knew a computer-chair would also be behind the desk.
The figure ran his index finger along the edge of the table as he walked along the side of it, examining the food. He came to a stop as a bowl of fruit came into his view. The figure reached his long arm out and slowly grabbed an apple from the bunch.
The figure examined the apple, turning it slowly in his hand. Boredom crept its grasp onto the figure after staring at the apple; he started to toss it from hand to hand. The apple made a slight smack sound as it hit his palm and his large fingers, and he decided to stop, not wanting to get caught. He started walking again, still following the edge of the table with his finger.
He came to the end of the table and walked up to the corner window. The window reached from the roof to the floor and showed a few small buildings and the ocean. He began to follow the path of the windows. After leaving the corner window, the view was of adjacent buildings and other buildings in the background. The figure could see Chinatown from the farthest window from the corner.
The figure turned his eyes to the desk. As he approached it, he looked at the random objects on the table. Then he set his mind on the computer. He sat down in the chair, which he had been right on guessing it was there, and turned on the monitor. The screen turned a bright blue, then turned to a picture of a family. Little icons for shortcuts to things like the Internet, files, and software tools popped up after the computer loaded. The figure looked over the names of the files; family photos, vacation pictures 2006, work files, and such. In the bottom right-hand corner was a file named: “Project: Chimera”.
Is that what I am to these people? The figure thought, clenching his free fist, some kind of twisted beast? He moved the mouse and clicked on the file.
