The light that prismed through the telescopic sight magnified his vision a hundred fold. He could smell the fresh rain upon the warm asphalt of the street below, a humid, earthy aroma that reminded him of a time long past. Reawakening friendly faces, siloughettes that called and gestured through his mind's eye. The noises of bustling people,car horns, and traffic far below fadded as his breathing lengthened. His ears popping as his heart-rate slowed. He relaxed his grip on the heat-guard forward of the chamber on his rifle. The buttstock of the M24 WinMAG settling into the pocket of his right shoulder. All at once, the faces from his memory were replaced by a single face in the optic of his weapon. The distance was great, a solid twelve-hundred meters, but the image in his scope never waivered or blurred. His motor functions shut themselves off, one by one and his pulse slowed. The average human heart, at rest, beats sixy-eight times a minute. Vincents had slowed to below forty-five.
The woman whom he now observed, the thin, barely noticable crosshair resting upon her left breast, was attractive. He shrugged this to the back of his mind as one might ignore the voice of a nagging elder. She twirled her hair slowly in her fingers, the auburn lockes glinting, and Vincent felt he could almost smell the conditioner she used. His respiration slowed to a crawl, and his finger brushed across the match-grade trigger, he applied pressure slowly, the breath fully leaving his lungs. Perhaps it was his imagination, but the womans face seemed to freeze the instant before the rifle recoiled in his grasp. And then she was gone her figure slumping out of view. Vincent ejected the 7.62 casing, catching it even as it made its terminal arch torward the hotel carpet.
