This is a series of stories I made for the background of one of my characters. His name is Qual and you can find his Bio on my previous journal entry. I know this is long, but I didn't want to post the six different stories seperately! I also used an online German dictionary for the titles, so don't complain if you see that I did something wrong! (I put translations of them in parentheses!)
Andenken aus Qual (Memory of Pain) Er Geabfahren Uns (he left us) “Daddy?” a three year old Qual asked, “Where are you going?” “I’m not coming back,” a man said, not answering the question well. “But where?” Qual asked again. “Why do you need to know?” the man asked. “Just in case,” Qual replied, “Mommy said that it’s good to know where your family is, just in case.” “Just in case, yeah right, whatever, I’m still not telling you,” the man replied, “tell her that I’m gone now. She’ll understand.” The man left the house and closed the door behind him. “He’s gone, isn’t he?” a woman said, coming up behind Qual. “Mommy, daddy said that he’s gone now and that you’d understand,” Qual said, “I don’t get it.” “I’ll tell you when you’re older,” she said, “Let’s go play.” “Ok!” he said excitedly. Warum Sie? (why her?) “Mom, what did dad mean all of those years ago?” a nine year old Qual asked. “You know how you and I are Dream Tamers and the bad people are Dream Hunters?” Qual’s mother asked. “Yeah, what about it?” Qual asked. “Well dad grew up as a Dream Hunter and he didn’t want to hurt us, so he left,” she explained. “Oh, ok. I guess dad really loved us,” Qual said. “Hey Qual,” his mom said, “Can you go and pick up some things for me from the market?” “Ok,” Qual said and took a list and basket from his mom, “I’ll be back soon!” Qual left. (When Qual comes back) “Mom’s going to be happy that I got everything,” Qual said happily. A bunch of adults ran past. “Hurry! Marilia and Qual might be in there still!” “I’m here, what about mom?” Qual asked and one of the women stopped. “You’re safe! Is your mother at home? The place is on fire!” “Mom’s... at home,” Qual replied and started running home. When he got there, his home was engulfed in flames. “Marilia’s still in there!” “MOM!” Qual yelled frantically, “MOM! WHERE ARE YOU?!” “She won’t be coming back,” a strange man in black clothes said, “She’s gone to the sky where she belongs. Dream Tamers are terrible people, just like the DreamEaters you see. Don’t worry, we don’t harm young children, but when you turn thirteen, beware. Oh, and I started the fire.” The man left Qual crying. “Why her? Why mom?” Qual asked, “Why did they kill her? It’s not her fault that she’s a d.t.” Ein Neu Andenken (a new memory) It had been a few weeks since Qual’s mother, Marilia, had died. A Dream Tamer had come to the small village saying that there was a DreamEater here that would come to give people pleasant sleep. Apparently, the man wanted to meet it. “Excuse me mister,” Qual said approaching the Dream Tamer, “Why is that DreamEater following you?” The man was sat outside a café with a DreamEater sat next to him. It looked like a red, striped wolf-dog with two tails. It had a purple jewel on its chest. “Koruna? He’s my partner d.e. I guess you’re a d.t. too?” the man asked. “Yeah, my mom was, too,” Qual replied. “Did she loose her abilities?” the man asked. “N-no, she... a man... a fire... a-” Qual was cut off by Koruna, the d.e. “A Dream Hunter got to her,” he said. “Yeah,” Qual replied. “What about your dad?” the man asked. “He left six years ago. I don’t know where he is,” Qual said. “Do you like it here?” the man asked. “No one really likes me,” Qual admitted. “Do you want to come and travel with me?” the man asked. “We will take care of you and teach you about the DreamEaters, Tamers, and Hunters,” Koruna added. “Yes please! I’d love to,” Qual replied. “Go get a couple extra clothes, a pen, and some money,” the man said, “I’m Gala, by the way.” “Mr. Gala?” Qual asked. “Just Gala,” he replied, then turned to Koruna, “go with him and make sure he’s fine, just in case.” “Yes Gala,” Koruna replied. “We’ll be back soon Gala!” Qual said and ran off with Koruna. Überall Abermals (all over again) “And don’t forget to keep to yourself when you travel,” Gala said to Qual, who was now thirteen. “I know that,” Qual replied. They had been walking through the forest and were almost to the next town. “You changed a lot since when we first met you,” Koruna said, “And I think you’re one of the most mature thirteen year olds I’ve ever seen. “I guess you could say that,” Qual replied. “Though you still need to loosen up sometimes,” Gala commented. “I do every now and then,” Qual replied. “Well, when we get to the town, we can go to the arcade or something,” Gala said, “Even this old man needs to feel like a kid again sometimes!” “How old were you when you became a Dream Tamer?” Qual asked. “I was fifteen when I became one and I met Koruna here when I was seventeen,” he replied. “I remember that you were in trouble with an angry drunk, a bar tender, and the store manager from the store next door,” Koruna said, “You had tried to go into the bar to get a glass of water and the bar tender had told you that you had to leave. Apparently, you also had sat down in a drunk’s seat and made him mad. You took the fight outside and the manager from next door didn’t like the noise and came out and join. I saw and jumped in to help. None of them were Dream Tamers so they all freaked out and thought you were some magician. You were a lot more carefree and sarcastic back then. “Those were the days,” Gala said, “Carefree and uncaring was the best way for me to live until I became a Dream Tamer.” “You’re maddening,” Qual said. “You’re too serious,” Gala said. “At least I’m not a 34 year old teenager,” Qual replied. “That hit the mark,” Koruna agreed. “You there! Halt!” “Looks like trouble,” Gala muttered. A man approached them. He had a large brown coat on and something didn’t seem quite right about him. “You have been charged with the being of Dream Tamers. Now come with me,” the man said to Gala. “What’s your proof?” Gala asked. “The DreamEater there,” he replied, pointing to Koruna. “And what of Koruna? Koruna’s just there,” Gala replied, obviously trying to get on the man’s nerves. “Being able to see it means that you are one, now come,” the man was irritated. “Who says Koruna isn’t my pet dog?” Gala asked. “Because we know he’s a d.e.” the man replied. “I’m still not going,” Gala said. “Well then I’ll deal your punishment here and now,” the man said, taking out a gun and shooting Gala in the heart. The gem on Koruna’s chest shattered at the same time the bullet hit. “GALA!” Qual shouted, running over to him. “Qual...” Gala said weakly. “Don’t talk! If you do it’ll get worse,” Qual said anxiously. “Qual... you were... like... a son... to me...” Gala said weakly, “now... go... before... he gets... you too.” Koruna tugged on the back of Qual’s shirt. “Boy, is there something behind you?” the man asked. “N-no,” Qual said, “nothing but Gala’s pet dog, Koruna.” “Fine then, we’ll take care of you later,” the man said, leaving. “What shall we do?” Koruna asked Qual, “Gala is dead-” “No he’s not!” Qual said in denial, “He’s not dead! “Qual, my partnership stone is gone,” Koruna said, “Gala is gone.” Qual heard Koruna sniff and turned around. The fur on his cheeks were wet. “Koruna,” Qual said. “Not many d.e. cry when their partners die,” Koruna said, sniffing again, “but there are some who’ve become friends as well as partners. I am one of them.” “It’s ok Koruna,” Qual said, hugging the d.e. “I miss him too.” (Later) Qual and Koruna sat near Gala for awhile until a man from the town showed up to investigate. When he saw Qual, he took him back to town. Koruna had followed. When they were alone again, Qual spoke. “Koruna, what are we going to do now?” Qual asked. “We... will keep going. I believe that Gala would like us to move on,” Koruna replied. “Okay. Then let’s go,” Qual said, and they left for the next town. After traveling for a few months, Koruna decided to go his own way to try to find the one that had killed Gala. Qual would travel alone mostly, requesting help from d.e. sometimes. Qual never wanted to have his partner cry if something happened, so he would tell the d.e. that wanted to form a partnership with him that he wasn’t a good d.t. Ein Tag aus Arbeitsweg (a day of travel) Qual was fifteen now, and it was time to move to the next town. It would be his sixteenth birthday the next day, so he was headed to the forest clearing that Koruna had shown him. He got the help of a flying d.e. to fly him there. Qual whistled and a flying d.e. came. “Can I help you?” it asked. “I need you to fly me to the Clear Hollow,” Qual replied. “Get on my back then,” it said and allowed Qual to get on, “I can only fly you so far, so after that, you’ll have to get a large, running d.e.” “That’s fine,” Qual replied. When they got as far as the d.e. would take them, he got off and whistled differently. “What do you want?” A cheetah like d.e. asked him. It was fairly large. “To go to the Clear Hollow, my d.e. friend wants to meet me there,” Qual replied. “Does this friend have a name?” it asked. “Koruna,” Qual replied, “Koruna Akatori Inuko Asumi.” “Ah, Koruna. He’s an old acquaintance of mine,” the d.e. replied, “get on my back and I’ll take you there. When they got to the clearing of the Clear Hollow, Qual thanked the d.e. and it left. He laid down under a tree at the edge and went to sleep. When he woke up, Koruna would be there and they would catch up and such. They wouldn’t have fun, but they would sit and talk. Ein Nochmalig Aussicht (a second chance) “So, you need to hitch a ride to the next town?” a farmer asked Qual. “Yes sir,” Qual replied. “How old are you?” he replied. “Sixteen,” Qual replied. “Why’s a kid like you travelin’?” the man asked, “Ah well. It ain’t none of my business. Get on the back of the Hay Wagon and you can ride up to the edge of town. There’s a park there, so you’ll know when to get off.” “Okay,” Qual said, going to get on the back of the wagon. “There’s a pretty young girl who’s there drawin’ sometimes,” the farmer muttered to himself, “I wonder if she’ll be there today?” Qual got on the wagon and they were off. When they got to the edge of town, he hopped of the back and started walking in the direction the wagon was going. He came to a tree with a d.e. stuck in it. Qual sighed and helped it get untangled. “Hey!” a girl called running up to him right before he continued on. After that day, his life would never be the same. He would have someone to travel with and a partner d.e. He would also share his past.
