Chapter 3
She sat there frozen stiff on the ground as she stared up at the giant, who was doing the same thing looking at her.
Jane could feel herself trembling, under the giant’s intense gaze.
The giant seemed to also notice her trembling.
“Hey you alright? You’re shaking” the giant asked with concern in his voice.
Jane could feel her throat tighten in her nervousness, and all that came out was a small squeak.
The giant blinked and tilted his head in confusion at the strange sound that Jane made. “I’m sorry I didn’t quite catch that what did you say?” He asked as he leaned closer.
Jane let out an “eep!” and scrambled backwards as she felt the will to move. Trying to get as far back from the giant as possible.
“Hey, where are you going?” The giant asked noticing her moving away.
Jane paused looking up into the giant’s eyes nervously. With some courage she spoke. “Oh...umm...it’s a lovely day isn’t it? Oh look a bird!”
As soon as the giant looked with all her will she jumped to her feet and took off running.
The giant seemed to notice her running too because now she felt the forest start to shake as he followed her.
Now Jane wasn’t the most athletic person in her gym class, but she knew how to run. She kept it up for a while trying to put distance between her and the giant, but she soon got tired. Maybe even more tired than usual.
She could feel her forehead burning up, like it was on fire. She must be having a fever, from falling in the river.
Didn’t her Mom ever tell her she should lie down if she was having a fever!
But there was a giant behind her what was she to do? She then spotted two rocks, leaning against each other.
Gathering the last of her energy before she collapsed she went and hid in between them.
She breathed heavily and coughed as she sat there, her mouth burning begging her to drink something. She never ran so hard in her life!
“Thump”
Jane felt herself bounce off the ground at the sudden earth shake.
It could only mean one thing, the giant was....
“Hmm she was just here a second ago...”
Right above her!
She could feel her heart pumping hard against her chest, as she held her breath trying to stay quiet.
“She couldn’t have gotten far...maybe she’s hiding.”
Her eyes widened. Why was he after her? Why couldn’t he see that she was pale as a ghost when near him? Couldn’t she be home right now? Cuddling near the fireplace while eating a fresh batch of cookies!
She could feel the giant move around as he looked for her. She shut her eyes tight while begging, ‘please don’t check the rocks, please don’t check the rocks, oh please don’t check the rocks!’
Of course not all pleas are always heard.
Suddenly the light from the entrance was blocked.
Jane didn’t need to turn around to see who it was, but she did anyways, and came face to face with the eye of the giant that was peeking through.
“There you are” the giant cried, sounding happy to have found her.
Well Jane wasn’t happy she didn’t want to be found, plus she had a fever which she could only guess was 103 degrees.
This was only adding to her stress.
Busy in her thinking, she heard some movement outside. She looked up to see the giants eye gone, and in its place a hand coming in reaching for her.
“Eep!” Shrieked Jane as she scrambled backwards and into the rock wall behind her. She tried to become one with the wall by pressing up against it.
She could feel a fingertip touch the sleeve of her sweater, but it wasn’t enough for him to get a good grasp on her.
So he pulled it back.
“Aren’t you gonna come out?” The giant asked sounding sad.
“No!” She said loudly. There was no way she was going to let the giant trick her!
“But why?” The giant asked lowering himself to peek through the rocks again.
“Because I said so!” She yelled. She had no idea why she found herself yelling, especially at someone who could easily crush her.
It must have been the fever. Being sick always made her in a bad mood.
The giant’s sad expression deepened. “Oh...well I guess I’ll just wait out here then” he said. Jane watched as he moved away from the entrance. She could only guess that he was only sitting somewhere close by.
For some reason Jane started to feel guilty about being so snappy at the giant.
Giving a cough, she relaxed against the stone wall.
What was she going to do now? Not only was the guilt eating her up, but the fever seemed to be getting worse!
With a hesitant sigh she cautiously crawled up to the entrance, and peeked out.
The giant was a few meters away from the rocks, sitting with his arms hugging his knees to his body.
What caught Jane’s main interest was his short blue hair.
‘Hmm...Odd but it’s neat’ she thought, studying him some more.
A large green scarf was wrapped around his neck.
She guessed to help keep the cold out.
He wore a brown sweater with a white shirt underneath, and had a simple pair of jeans. He had black shoes on his feet.
Jane blinked; he didn’t seem too bad, now that she got a good look at him. But she wasn’t going to take chances!
The giant must have felt her staring because he turned, and she was now staring into his eyes.
It felt like they had been staring at each other for ages but in reality it had only been a few minutes.
She felt so lost in his gaze that she didn’t notice his hand reaching for her, till it wrapped around her.
She jolted in surprise and struggled slightly.
“Relax, I’m not going to hurt you” the giant said softly.
With that said he lifted her closer to his face.
Jane still slightly frightened, hid her face in his hand, shaking a little.
When nothing bad happened yet, curiosity getting the best of her, she lifted her head slightly to peek at the giant, expecting a mean look.
Instead she saw a gentle, kind look in the giant’s eyes. A look that said that he would not even harm a fly.
She blinked surprised, and at awe at the giant.
The giant seemed to notice her look, for he smiled.
Jane wanting to return it, smiled back even thought there was a hint of nervousness in it. But who wouldn’t be a little nervous?
The giant tilted his head as he seemed to be studying her.
“What’s you name?” He asked.
“J-Jane” she answered in a shaky voice. The giant smiled more.
“That’s a pretty name, I’m Aiden”
