Chapter 2 - Two New Lives
I had been living within Forage’s pack lands for sometime and the Gazonas had grown used to my company. At first Forage had been the only one to bring me parts of the pack meals and his female sometimes followed his tail like a lost pup. He told me she just felt competition but after the night she confronted me her presence made me shift uncomfortably. Other than her, whose name I chose to forget, the pack members grew to me. Every day some other wolf would follow the alpha’s to see me.
The first was Daisy, the lone beta femme. Her pelt tan and her eyes burnt amber, her spirit was as warm as the pools that looked to me that bright spring day she accompanied Forage. I wagged my tail and was happy with her immediately, lowering myself in respect to her rank. Her own tail wiggled as she tried to show herself off to me, fluffing her fur and letting a low growl through her ivory teeth. I whimpered, not wanted to upset her, but as I heard her happy whine I looked up and she licked my face. She came back almost every time after that, and sometimes stayed longer to share meals with me.
About a weeks time later, two dark wolves followed and stuck behind Daisy. They didn’t seem to thrilled about having someone that wasn’t part of their pack staying on their land, and sharing they’re prey. Daisy stood beside me, assuring me I was welcome, and Forage and his mate lay in a spot of sun watching the happenings. Daisy dropped a hunk of meat and the dark wolves growled. My suspicion of their distaste for the situation was confirmed. Though I killed for myself everyday, I needed the extra food Forage promised, feeding the child within was too much for one female. I hovered beside the meat, my tongue falling out of the side of my open mouth as they slowly approached. Daisy backed off then and the wolves rushed to me, smelling me over, one came awfully close to my tummy and a growl tore through me. The one flinched showing its lesser title, but the other snapped the air and bit the loose fur on my back in warning. I submitted after my outburst and later found out that the one that bit me was Tor, the gamma and the other was his mate Savage, just a pack member. Tor occasionally came to advise me and his alphas of some things that would concern food rationing if famine came.
Others still came all just members with no definite rank, Dory, Bark, Fell, Tine, Alee, and my favorite Doom. Doom was a red colored wolf, but he shared no blood to our cousins in the warmer temperatures. He was the second to last and he licked my face like Daisy had. His whining warmed me and Forage looked happy, as we seemed to be content with each other. They didn’t stay long with me but Doom nuzzled my side with a grin before they left. Something seemed so familiar about him, and I couldn’t place it as my ivory fangs tore into the meat they left behind.
I figured that Doom might have been the last of the wolves from the Gazonas but the next day Forage and Daisy brought me a freshly killed rabbit I could hear whimpered behind the two. My ears perked as I saw a frail grey wolf, the whiteness of her belly was larger than average but most of the wolves with the Gazonas weren’t average looking. She crawled over on her white belly, submitting to me. I knew then she was the omega wolf as I asked her name. In a weak, yet sweet voice that was obviously young, she spoke her name. I liked it, Astrid, and I could feel hidden power behind that voice. I smiled asking her to stand in front of me, I was not with the pack and she needn’t submit to me. She told me something that warmed me; I had needed it seeing as it was close to the time that the heavy pains of birth pressed upon my body.
“I chose to do this Deo. You will be the mother of legend”
I fell close to her and nudged her with my muzzle. The little Omega called me Deo, my real name that only Daisy, Forage and Doom spoke to me as. I licked her neck and she, the top of my head. Forage growled and my hackles automatically rose and I looked at Forage with hard eyes. I had learned by now that his eyes were the doors to his emotions and I saw that he wished me to back off. Being alpha male he couldn’t let me spoil his Omega and he stood over Astrid and me. We both whimpered and she rolled onto her back, I dare not do that with my pups growing inside. My whimpers stopped and anger rose, Forage stood and didn’t speak but turned and began to walk away.
“Omega come!”
He yelled when he couldn’t feel her behind him, she whined and looked to me as I whispered Astrid to leave. She did quickly knowing she would be in trouble when they got back with the rest of them. Right before the were out of site in the dense wood, Forage turned, his ears were back and his eyes, soft, showing he hadn’t wanted me to be upset with him. I sighed as a round of pains pulsed through me, I had begun to feel these as the pups grew within.
I slunk back into my den and whimpered as I rolled over to my side, my eyes were weak now and the pain became over powering as my legs twitched. There was nothing to be done, I had knowledge of herbs and I had wished I had found some lavender to ease my mind, and some peppermint for the pain, before I had laid down. There was no getting back up, another, shaper, pain kicked into my side and I squinted my eyes closed. My mouth fell open as my tongue dropped to the ground and I could taste the rich earth. I panted heavily as I lay there, hurting more every second.
A final pain came into the mix, and it felt as something burst within my round belly. I now knew, by instincts, the time had come for my pups. I whined in pain and excitement, whatever I was feeling in hurt didn’t matter, all of a sudden as my eyes seemed to glaze over and my muscles contracted. The hero, the one that had gotten me into this spot was here. I closed my eyes and let my muscles push; I looked around for any dangers and squeezed my eyes shut again.
I continued pushing and naturally my muscles rippled to help release the young. I yelped as I felt pressure and my eyes widened as the rest of my body relaxed, all energies centering on birth. A gentle voice ripped me from the trance and at first I was terrified.
“Deo?”
I could hear Doom’s voice and I whimpered, and then growled. I felt a strong urge to keep him away, away from the birth. It was something the males shouldn’t see and inside I knew that. He knew this as well and came in no further. I could see his shadow back out but I felt his spirit linger as he lay outside the entrance. I whimpered more as I could feel the pup enter into the world, further and further. The pain was almost unbearable as I pushed harder than ever and I could hear Doom’s own strong vocals whine in concern. My light colored paws stretched across the ground and dug into the soft dirt as I twisted my head about as my tail flicked wildly in a final push and if a rush of relief the little pup I had been carrying was outside my body.
The little one took its first breath as I licked its belly and instantly it shrieked against the cold world, my tail wagged faster and faster as I curled my front paws around it to keep it warm as I continually licked the small bundle. It nuzzled my face and tail with blind love the made me tingle inside. After I decided it was done with its bath I curled close, exposing my belly to it. Quickly the pup found a milk spot and began suckling, I whined happy to let Doom know that the birth was over. I had thought for sure there was more, but the pulses stopped, and I felt like I had my body to myself once more.
Doom stood outside all night and the next day, soon howling to his alpha to let him know that one; he was with me, and two; there was a pup. After the pup had suckled its fill and fell asleep I longed to see Doom. I stood quietly praying the little one wouldn’t wake and I snuck out into the cool evening air, I had been in there a whole night and day.
When I first exited my den Doom licked me gently and then stood back and looked at me. I breathed the fresh night air in, it was so much cooler outside and the smells of birth were barely noticeable. His eyes were kinder now, and something stirred within me for him as he looked over me. I wanted to be nearer to him and I moved closer, he met me the rest of the way and nuzzled my neck, whining happily. Something told me inside, that the pup in the den wasn’t the only one to start a new life today.
I could hear wolves howling, it was the Gazonas they were howling for me, for me and my new young, the little male that was mine. Doom looked at me as he sat beside me and leaned his long muzzle to the air and howled, I too leaned back and howled with the rest of the energy I could muster. Filled with joy and love, for once I felt like I belonged.
