Today...I made sushi with a dear friend of mine. It's become a custom for us to spend time together every now and then, making sushi. We've been doing it for quite a while already. I think it's been over a year since we had our first sushi evening. Anyway, we had some problems this time that made the process take almost three hours! O_o
I don't know if you've ever made sushi rolls, but the idea is basically to wash and cook the rice, mix it with a rice vinegar mixture and then roll the rice inside seaweed sheets along with fish or cucumber or something like that.
Anyway, I had bought the same vinegar we always use, but for some reason the other ingredients (salt and sugar) didn't mix with it at all. We did everything according to the recipe we always use, but it didn't taste the same as usual. It was sickeningly sweet. The saltiness had somehow disappeared and we didn't manage to get the right flavour no matter how much salt we added. In the end we mixed the salt with water and managed to reduce the sweetness, but it still didn't taste as delicious as before.
I have no idea what went wrong...maybe there was something wrong with the vinegar. My friend did say it looked kinda thick...*shrug* I don't know...Next time I'm definitely going to try a different brand of vinegar. I don't trust the old one anymore.
Well, the rolls were edible after all. I enjoyed quite a many with soy sauce just a while ago. I just hope they'll be better next time...much better...
