CHAPTER FIVE
Ryoku's Sensitivity
arrow Again. I wake up and he’s gone AGAIN. This was getting on my nerves. I stood up, I wasn’t hungry as usual. Maybe I was just thoroughly upset with Ryoku. Then I remembered how fragile he sounded the night before. I took it upon myself to try to be nicer to him. Sighing I glanced around for him, I didn’t have much to do until he appeared. I noticed that my mini sword was gone, but took no notice.
arrow I planted myself on the ground in front of the lake and brought my knees to my chest, resting my head in my hands. I squinted as I gazed at the tall grass on the other side. I’m not sure how much time passed but soon enough, Ryoku came from the bushed behind me. He created that same goofy grin as he scratched the back of his head. I stood and turned to look at him and was surprised by what I saw. He looked awful. His eyes were puffy and dark as if he had gotten no sleep and his cloak had a few small rips in it, not to mention it was damp and had dirt smeared on it.
arrow “Ry- Ryoku?” I stammered. I was surprised that he could have let anything best him, even if it was just nature.
arrow “I got it Kiko!” Hi said this so excitedly, I almost forgot that I was supposed to be nice to him because of his sudden shyness.
arrow “Got what?” I was sure to force some interest in my voice. He bowed so that he was closer to my level and held out my mini sword, only this time, etched in yellow on the handle were shaky and scratchy letters that took a while to read, and not just because I had only recently learned, it was because the handwriting was awful. The words read: Kiko -- heart .
arrow I couldn’t bite back being mean any longer. “And you’re going to teach me how to write with that handwriting?” I placed my hands on my hips. He looked toward the sky, standing straight and tall, he placed one hand to his head as the wind ruffled his hair and my shirt, the hand holding the sword rested on his side. “Oh come now, my handwriting is beautiful, I didn’t write this!”
arrow This had me laughing for two minutes straight. The way he had said ‘beautiful’ and the pose he was in really set me off. All the while Ryoku stared down at me with such a pleased look. Like a father whose newborn had laughed at him the first time, but I paid this no attention.
arrow Soon we were sitting in front of each other with a salad and fish for a mid-morning meal. I paused in my eating to look at him. “Sooo… Who wrote it anyway?”
arrow “Someone very close to you.”
arrow “Who??”
arrow “You don’t know them.”
arrow “Then how are they close to me?”
arrow “They will be.”
arrow “Weirdo.” I muttered, he was always saying strange things like that. We ate again. I paused again. “Sooo… How’d you get so bummy?”
arrow “I did some things. Didn’t have time to clean up.’
arrow ‘What kind of things?” I stared impatiently.
arrow “You’ll know when the time is right, Kiko.”
arrow I remembered him saying something like this just last night. I was getting mildly worried, but decided not to push him.
