Yup yup, time for more story! Aren't you special? Picking up where I left off:
Since the day she was born and probably before, Adrian had been bird-like. Not in a freakish way, but more of a "superior being" sort of way. Like an angel. She had eyes that were almost gold looking, and even more so in candlelight. Huge waves of gentle black hair, inviting and soft like baby eagle feathers. Almost translucent fingernails that grew in a point naturally, making a nice clicking sound when she accidentally or on purpose hit them together. And wings. Lovely black wings with a slightly silvery sheen that illuminated on each perfectly positioned feather. Large wings that were easily hidden thanks to indentations on her back. Adrian would fold her wings ever so delicately into these indentations and slip baggy shirts on over, so the long feathers would not show. Usually the longest feathers were just tucked into her pants so that they fell along her leg to about mid-thigh.
Despite these differences, Adrian had been able to lead a relatively normal life. She was kept in her room at home, hardly ever left, and was kept with an escort when she did leave. Her mother beat her occassionally, cursing her for ever being born, and looking at her with such hate that it made Adrian shiver just thinking about it. The only thing that kept Adrian sane was the idea that one day, she may be allowed out of her mother's sight long enough to learn to fly. It was the only thing she had ever wanted. To be up above the world that hated her, to soar above on the sweetest smelling wind, the warm wind that kept her up without Adrian even trying. If she could leave, she could be happy.
And yet she was stuck here, with an abusive mother, hateful teachers, and a father that was almost never home. Her father did not know about Adrian's "condition", and so he loved her. He would buy her little dresses that she would never wear, and silken ribbons that she wore in her hair every now and then. She never allowed him to hug her, for fear of ruffling her delicate feathers. He tried so hard to provide for Adrian and her mother, which was comical in it's own way. For some reason beyond her comprehension, Adrian's father never suspected there was anything special about her. Just the thickheadedness of a father, she assumed.
Now Adrian held one of her nails up to the light coming in from the big window. She could almost see the birds through the nail. They were looking at her, as if inviting her to come sing with them. She half-smiled at the little puffballs, and they were content to flit about the maze of twigs, stopping to c**k their heads at one another before moving on. Adrian's heart began to ache with longing.
"Last time young lady, pay ATTENTION!" With the final word, Ms. Ashe smacked the table with a ruler, shocking Adrian out of her daydream.
Adrian swiveled her gold eyes to the teacher, scrutinizing her appearence for once. Her eyes took in the half-moon glasses, to the hideous floral print dress, to the ruler still held in the pink nail polished hand.
"Your nail polish is chipping," Adrian said, looking at the teacher sideways, with half-interest. Laughter exploded around her, accompanied by whoops and whistles.
"Quiet! Ms. Morris, would you please repeat your last remark?" Her look alone was murderous. Adrian rose with deliberate slowness, always watching Ms. Ashe with a predator's awareness. It was a trick she had learned early on that intimidated people effectively.
"I said, your nail polish is chipping. You'll never find a man with your nails like that. Try three coats next time, instead of just one," Another uproar of laughter ensued. Adrian waited for what she knew was coming, always alert.
"Well, if that's the way you feel, perhaps you would like to share your feelings with the Dean!" Ms. Ashe's eyes practically blazed with hate-fueled fire.
"If it means getting out of here, definately," Ignoring the look of shock and resentment on the teacher's face, Adrian gathered her backpack and her notebook. Before leaving, Adrian made sure that she pointed out how damp with drool her notebook was. Laughter and cheers followed her out into the hall.
