The War that Never Was

Chapter III

When me and Jasper reached our uncle's pub, it was deserted. I looked around the pub and blinked, I noticed Midgar at the corner of my eye coming down the stairs that led to our rooms. "Where is everyone Midge?" He looked down at me and shook his head. "I heard that there was a meeting out in the Gilabon Square. I was just about to leave to go. It says that all the men and boys go there..." He had a look of hurt on his face as he looked out the window. "You wouldn't mind going to take your brother will you?"
"Not at all... C'mon Jasper." I turned out the door and Jasper followed.
"What do you think this is all about?" He asked trying to keep up, I guess I was walking to fast. I slowed down the pace after making it to the square where three men dressed in armor were sitting at a desk. People where surrounding the desk signing up for something. I walked up to the soldier, he was one of ours. "What's going on?"
"All males are to be drafted into the Army of Rozzaria." He looked at my brother as my brother stepped forward. "So boy, are you ready to serve?" My heart started pounding, I knew what was going on and I wasn't going to let them take my brother, I protected him for too long to have him ripped away. "He's not going!" I held onto his arm as Jasper pulled away from me. "Let me go Aurora! Mom's gone... You don't have to baby me anymore." He stared at me as I felt small and I could do nothing about it, he was bound to be taken anyway.
"Miss... Its for the good of Rozzaria." The soldier stared at me as Jasper snorted and snatched the pen from the soldier and wrote his name down. It felt like I was a ghost that just watched the one you loved sign their life over to death himself. Jasper stood straight and stared at me once again before going over to the airship. He's right... Mom isn't alive anymore... Maybe I was being too protective. Be safe Jasper. I looked at him one last time as I nodded and waved then watched the soldiers get everyone on board. As soon as the doors kicked up the boosters turned on as it slowly lifted from the ground as it turned then blasted off with lightning speed to the west. My brown hair whipped against my cheeks as I pushed it back.

The wind soon died down as I looked over my shoulder noticing the Tuor Soldiers came running guns at the ready. I quickly turned back around to noticed more of our soldiers. "Fire!" My heart started pounding more as I ran from their line of fire along with other people in the area. The guns started firing as bullets ricoched off the walls as I hid behind a wall. I pulled my gunblade out and aimed at one of the Tuors and shot at their head as the soldier let out a choking noise and fell to the ground. I smirked feeling proud that I hit one of those bastards. A few of our men fell as I made a run for it to my uncle's pub. No one followed which was a good thing since I wasn't the best runner of my time. Once I reached to the pub and slammed the door shut and ran upstairs to Midgar's room. "Tuors! At the square!" I tried to shout but I was too exausted. Midgar growled and stood up towering over me as he walked over to a wall and put his hand on it as his print lit up and the wall lifted. I blinked dumbfounded he motioned me to come as I nodded and followed quickly. The wall opened up a large hallway as the wall slammed behind us. "Is Jasper alright?"
"Yes... He went on the airship. I'm afraid, I will never see him again." I heard him snort as we were at the lower city of Rozzaria. "C'mon. Tuors know that we are rebelling against them and we must leave. You understand Aurora?" I bit my lip and tried to say something but nothing came out. "We will have to stay underground..." I nodded as we arrived at a small home by a store. It was beautiful down here, not like sewers or waterways. I sat down on a chair as Midgar paced around the room. "How come you didn't draft?" He stopped and sighed and sat down on a chair. "I've already served once... It was 7 years ago. A year before I adopted you and your brother. Rozzaria and Tuor were at war constantly. Until we came to a peace treaty after the king passed away with the queen. Kings had complete power in the empire, it was rare that a woman would be king. They say that if a woman ever inherited the throne, she would be corrupt with power." He shook his head. "The queen killed herself because she couldn't bear handling the empire on her own... She was such a wonderful queen, beautiful too. Such a shame though." I looked down at my feet, I stood then walked over to a bed. "I'm going to rest Midge." He nodded. "Night."

A few weeks past since my brother Jasper left to protect our Pearl. A few days ago it was his birthday, 12 years-old. He was getting older then I expected. I sat on a railing of a small fountain area where a few plants and ferns grew as the sun shined down from above. The wind blew my hair as I hopped off the railing and walked to the stairwell to Gilabon. I squinted as the sun bared on my skin, it was a while since I been up here. I walked down the streets noticing that there were no soldiers around as a few people just relaxed and leaned against buildings. A few Boarins still held up their shops as other Boarins came to pig out, literally, on the food they were provided with. I walked down an alleyway as I notced a soldier, one of ours. He was limping along holding onto his side as he was using the wall for support. I ran over and caught the soldier as he was falling. He seemed rather on the small side for a soldier. He coughed as I pulled off his helmet then noticed the yellow feathery hair of my brother. "Jasper!" It felt like my heart skipped a few beats as I held him close. "Aurora..." He smiled weakly with his beautiful blue eyes looking at me, they were slightly glazed over. "I missed you..." He spoke weakly as I felt his cheeks and spoke to him softly. "You're going to be alright. You're alright..." I spoke shakily as I looked around. "Someone help!" I felt him wince as he held my hand. "I can't Aurora... Have I grown up yet?" Tears started to swell in my eyes as I tried to smile but my lips kept twitching into a frown. "Yea... You have." He smiled as his eyes looked heavier and he closed them. "Jasper... Jasper... Jasper!!" I shouted realizing he would never wake up as I held him tightly to me as I could feel a warm liquid stain my clothes. I started to cry as I looked up and noticed Tuor soldiers. Anger soon engulfed me as I slowly put Jasper down and stood up pulling my gunblade out of it's hilt. "It was about time to put one of you sorry sods down." One of them spoke. "It's time for Tuor to go back to their Empire like the dogs they are!!" I shouted as they put up their guns, before they could fire I ran and stabbed one of the soldiers up under their armor into their ribcage as the other fired only hitting my shoulder. I winced from the pain and growled and pulled out the blade from the man's body. I lunged at the second soldier and swiped the gun away with my sword as I put the blade tip of my weapon to his neck. He stared at me with his eyes filled with fear I snarled and shoved my blade into his neck as his eyes rolled over and he choked. I pulled my blade out as the soldier fell to the ground. I panted as a few people came and had their children behind them. I looked down at the dead soldiers, dropping my weapon I looked at my hands. I averted my gaze from the people and picked up my weapon and hilted it as I picked up my brother and walked back to my uncle's.

Walking into the small room I put Jasper on the bed as Midgar walked over and sighed ruffling his hair. "I've never though I'd see him like this..." I walked over to a chair away from the bed as I cried. "Aurora, there are many things we can't stop. Death is one of them." He walked over to me as I batted his hand away. "You think I don't know that!?" I stood and pushed out the door and walked to the fountain where I sat before and put my head in my hands. I looked to the side seeing a Rozzaria soldier post something on the wall and walk away. I blinked and walked over to the paper. "They are having drafting sign ups again..." I ripped the paper off the wall and looked up at the open sky above. I walked to an alleyway and snuck into a small area where no one was except boxes ready to be shipped out. I took my gunblade out and held it up to my head as I pulled my hair into a ponytail as I cut it with the sharp blade. I looked around as I spotted a large curtain as I ripped it and made it into a shirt to hide my torso from having my breasts give myself away. I walked up to Gilabon and found the desk from before. I looked at the soldier as he looked at me for a while then spoke. "Are you willing to serve and defend Rozzaria?"
"Yes-" I cleared my throat and spoke to sound more manly. "I mean, hell yea." The soldier raised his eyebrow and gave me the pen, before I went to sign my name and stopped. I coudln't put my real name down or they'd kill me, literally. I signed my fake name down. "Welcome aboard... Reks..." I nodded and walked onto the airship.

It was so nice and spacious on board as I noticed a small creature, it was a Moogle as it looked up at me and smiled. "Here, I'll show you your uniform and where you can sit, kupo!" it waddled into a hallway as the doors opened as it handed me a colorful leather padded uniform. "There you are. You are welcome to change if you wish, kupo!" I nodded as it still stood there. "Uhm... Alittle privacy." it blinked then rubbed the back of it's head. "Sure sure, tell me when you're done, kupo!" He closed the door as I sighed in relief and put on my uniform, it was alittle snug in the torso. The arms were alittle big aswell but the rest fit perfectly. He walked back in as I turned putting my short hair up in a bun. "Your face looks so young and soft kupo! People might be suspicious of you." His little antenna with the pom pom on the end bounced as he waddled back out and showed me to my spot. "Everyone is onboard, kupo!" As another moogle came to the captain. "Very well." The captain spoke as the door closed as the engines started. We soon took off as I looked out the giant glass window watching us cut through the clouds at lightning speed. "I will save our empire... And avenge Jasper, for you mother... For our empire..." I whispered.
