Taking It Back
Two more days of nothing passed, the crew waited to arrive at the space station where all the refugees were. The computer had alerted them that there was only two hours before they reached the destination. Only Adam was awake, everyone else had fallen asleep, but he was too excited, he couldn’t stop thinking about Abella. He sat in the pilot’s chair and tapped the dashboard with his fingers. He had waited three years to see her again and he couldn’t believe this was real. He felt his eyelids drooping from watching the dark emptiness of space,
He was jerked to life by Vida who had been softly repeating his name, “Adam, hey Adam, look we’re here.”
Adam rubbed his eyes groggily and looked out the window. He jumped as he saw a space station in the distance.
“We’re here? Did I fall asleep? What happened? How long ‘till we get there?” Adam’s face turned from sleeplessness to anxiety and his eyes searched Vida’s for the answers.
“In about ten minutes we’ll reach the station. Don’t worry.”
Relieved, Adam fell back into his chair.
“What kind of place is it?” He asked Vida
“On the display it read as an… internment camp.”
“For refugees?”
“No… for prisoners.”
“What? I thought they were fleeing from their planet!”
Vida sighed. “Scipio! Where did you get your info from?”
Scipio perked up, and tapped a few keys on his keyboard. “Says here the computer just canned all the information in this galaxy.”
Vida sighed. “Let me guess, one of them was a Slaver vessel, which no doubt has Adam’s sister listed in the roster.”
There was the sound of keys tapping.
“Maybe….You might be right.”
“You know I am!” She huffed at Scipio. “So what do you want to do Adam?”
“The only thing we can do. The only thing that’s right, we have to go get her.” He replied.
“Inside an internment camp?”
“Not unless she’s anywhere else.”
“Fine, whatever you want to do Captain. Look, there it is see for your self.”
“See what? Oh…”
As Adam looked at the display, a bulky rust colored building came drifting slowly into view, becoming a small dot to be squinted at, to a small space station, only about five floors in all. On the outside it looked to be abandoned. But as they came closer two small ships departed from the station to meet them. The radio buzzed, and Vida picked it up. “Yes?”
“This is escort one to trade ship, what is your business here?”
“Hold on a moment.” Vida said into the radio. “What should we tell them? Should we try to find another way?”
“Uhhh… Trade ship. I can hear you whispering. You might want to stop holding the receiver button.”
“Uh… thanks, and sorry. We uh… we came here for a slave.”
“Well why didn’t you say so. Welcome to Necron, Slavers Haven. If you’ll follow me, you can dock inside and check out our new line, just in from Erandor.”
Vida pushed Adam down, as he shot up to yell into the radio.
“That would be great, thanks. We’ll set our ship to follow you.” Vida tapped a key.
“Don’t go losing your cool, Adam. We don’t want them to find out tha-“
The radio fizzed, “I can still hear you.”
Vida jumped at the voice and hit the off switch on the radio.
“We can’t let them find out were here to steal a slave.” She hissed.
“Why can’t we just buy her?” Jonah looked up from his evening nap. “Wouldn’t that be easier?”
The crew looked at him for a moment as though he were crazy. Then their mouths formed silent comprehension as it hit them.
“It does make sense.” Adam said as he shrugged his shoulders.
“I guess that would mean no sneaky? Damn, I’ll go put away my spandex.” Scipio looked slightly downtrodden.
“Amazingly enough, the man has a point.” Vida agreed.
The crew felt as the ship bumped against something.
“The Shepard has docked at Necron. Have a nice stay.”
“That’s our cue, come on guys, we have work to do.” Adam said as he stood up. The rest of the crew followed as the door slid open, revealing the smiling face of a slaver. He wore leather... everything and showed the crew of The Shepard much more than what they wanted to see. He ushered them along the dark corridors, into a darkly lit room, bout ten feet, by five feet wide, with computer monitors lining the wall.
“You can search our directory for age, skin color, race, pretty much anything you want.”
“What about name?” Adam asked curiously as he started punching buttons.
“Sure! Unless you want to give them a new one.”
Adam typed in Abella. A red screen popped up with a small warning.
“Ouch, sorry kiddo, looks like she’s been chosen to be the bosses new concubine.” The man whistled, and continued to talk, unaware of Adam’s growing rage. “Looks like she’s gonna be pounded by the big cheese, that’s though luck.”
Adam felt a nerve tighten, and he swung around and brought his fist into the slavers face, sending him clean off the floor, and breaking one of the monitors on the other side. The man was left there mumbling about cheese, as Adam punched up for the location for the “Boss”.
“It says here he’s on the fifth, floor, that’s only two floor up. Lets go!”
“What do you mean two floors?” Scipio asked.
“Well, it says were on the third floor right now. It’s the Section where slavers come and find new girls… or boys. The two below are their quarters.”
“Right, makes sense enough, lets go then.”
“Elevators down this way.”
The foursome rushed down the dark hall way, and turned right, and then left, and then right again. It all looked the same. But Adam stopped the group and stood for a moment. There was a split in the hall just in front of them in a “T” shape. Adam peered to the right and saw the elevator being guarded by two slavers. As he watched three others came marching up.
“Hey, Luke, did you hear? Someone punched poor old Zach into one of those monitors in the visitor’s room. He kept mumbling something about cheese. But keep on the look out.”
“Sure thing Reg.” The second slaver nodded.
Adam crept back, and faced the others.
“We can’t go that way, it’s being guarded, and they already know about Zach.”
“Who?” Vida looked at him inquiringly.
“Zach… oh right, that slaver I punched, remember him, well it looks like they found him.” Adam gave a searching look around the walls. And saw a white sign pointing down the left fork. It read “Stairs”
“Look!” he said, and pointed at the sign. “Stairs! Lets go.” Adam led the group down the left fork, and walked up to a brown door with a single pane of glass centered near the top. He pushed open the door, and the crew made their way in. As the door swung in, an alarm sounded, and the crew froze, for a moment.
“What was that?” Jonah asked, Adam.
“An alarm, these doors must be rigged. C’mon, lets go up, and get Abella, then get out of this place.”
The alarm blared above the trio as they made their way up the stairs. To Adam the stairs seemed endless. He watched as the number 4 flashed past, and he pumped his legs faster up the stairs. The crew came to a landing and a small sign saying “Floor 5”. In front of them stood a single wooden door. There was no small windowpane like the others. Adam ran towards, and lifted his leg to stomp down the door. But the handle turned, and the door opened, giving a very surprised slaver a heavy kick in the gut leavening him unconscious on the floor.
Adam turned and shrugged at his surprised crew, and stepped over the man. Inside the doorway there was only one corridor, it was a flashy silver, and extended about fifty feet, where it met a new door, the same color as the surrounding material, but equipped with a black door handle. Adam walked towards it, until he stood ten feet from the silver entrance. He looked from the doorway to his friends, “This is it. Is everyone ready?” Adam turns to the door, and stares at it for a few moments, preparing for what awaited him on the other side. As he stared blankly at the door, he saw it open slowly. A man exited, and brought his face up from a small pile of papers he was looking at. He stared at the foursome for a moment, and his face turned to a mask of horror. He quickly grasped for the doorknob, not once taking his hands off the crew. He opened the door, and side stepped inside. Adam looked at his friends with a look of confusion on his face. He reached for the doorknob and opened the door. A humming sound could be heard for a split second before a red laser whizzed by Adams head. In surprise, he threw himself out of the way and into the room. Adam pushed himself up and saw that ten burly Slavers, all holding pistols, surrounded him. “Hi,” he ventured saying before a small smoking hole appeared by his head. “Shut up, the boss wants to talk to you.” Said a particularly angry slaver, pointing the weapon at Adams head. “Tell your friends that it’s OK for them to come in.”
“Uh… guys. You can come in. It’s kinda safe.”
Jonah peeked a head around the silver door. There was the sound of 9 pistols swerving to point at him. Jonah’s head, shot back behind the door and there was some quiet whispering. Scipio entered this time, leading Jonah, with Vida taking the rear. Scipio waved at Adam.
“Hey.” He said to Adam meekly.
Adam merely nodded at Scipio. This was not how the plan was supposed to go. Now they were probably going to become slaves.
“I’m sorry you guys, you shouldn’t have come with me, you should of stayed with the ship and waite-“
“Quiet, the boss is here!” One of the slavers yelled at Adam, and gave him a rough kick in the ribs.
“Where?” Adam’s head turned inquiringly around the room, and his eyes found a door situated in the far side of the room. Adam realized he hadn’t actually looked at the room he was in, and saw that it was actually quite nice. Lush silk pillows filled the far wall near the door, with only a large chair ornate with gold vines, and a decorated top, showing where the boss sat. Around the chair were a few small three-inch brass handles on the floor meant for locking up slaves for his pleasure. Adam looked at the decorated chair, and then a movement caught his eye, and he saw the door near the far wall slide open. Inside the doorway was a black abyss, he thought he could faintly make out the sounds of chains clinking together. A slave was thrown out, she fell to her knees and quivered for a moment. A large black boot appeared and then a figure emerged from the dark. A large dark skinned man stepped out and looked around. In his hands he had a chain that connected to the quivering slaves collar on her neck. The man was large, standing at 6’5 he wore a pistol on his hip, and his faced seemed incapable of forming into a smile. He didn’t look too intelligent, but then again, how smart do you have to be to lead a bunch of slavers. He grunted at seeing Adam on the ground and made his way to the Chair. Instead of sitting in it though, he took a position beside it. Adam looked strangely at the man. Surely he was the boss. He did fit the profile after all he was big bulky and most of dumb as a horses a-
“Who are these people?” A strong female voice split through Adam’s thoughts. He looked around quickly, he hadn’t recalled seeing a female in the room. His eyes looked around quickly and found the source of the voice. Just in front of the door, which the hardy man had emerged, stood a well-figured woman wearing knee high leather boots. She had on a corset, which showed her bounty, and accentuated her curves. She had a whip tied to her belt, along with cuffs, and a small collar with a chain. Her pale skin reflected off her raven black hair, and her strong cheekbones gave her a very pleasant look. Her stiletto’s clacked along the hard floor as she neared the chair, where she gracefully sat her body with the tiniest squeak of protest from her tight outfit.
“Boss… these are the guys who broke in about fifteen minutes ago. They are the ones who knocked Zach into the wall and left George unconscious.”
The woman turned her eyes onto the four.
“Why did you knock those poor souls unconscious. If I’m not mistaken, I’ve trained all my slavers to be kind and courteous.” The woman’s eyes seemed to want to bore into his very soul scouring for the answers to the questions she asked.
“Yeah, I guess he was pretty nice. It’s… he hit a real soft spot in me. And I think I snapped a little bit.”
The woman roared with laughter, “Snapped a little? I would call sending a man across a room and into a computer more than a little.”
Adam felt the blood rush to his cheeks. “It was a accident.” He mumbled.
“Aww, the cold blooded killer blushes.” She cooed at Adam.
“I didn’t kill anyone!” He said softly.
The woman laughed. “So why did you really come here?”
“I’m looking for someone.”
The woman’s face twisted into a look of curiosity. “Who?”
“My… my sister.”
“Your sister? Well what would she be doing on a slave ship?”
“She lived on Erandor, we ran a scan on your ship, and found that her name was in your roster.”
The woman stroked the slave thoughtfully, the tears streamed down her face, and the woman pulled on her chain causing her to squeak in anguish.
“What’s her name?”
“Abella…”
The slave gasped
The woman placed a palm on one of the arms of her chair, and a small screen folded out. She tapped it a few times, and an uneasy look passed over her face. She tapped the screen again, this time being careful with her fingers. Her eyes looked from the screen to Adam, and back again.
“Are you sure that’s her name.”
“Yes. As sure as I have been of anything.”
The woman looked troubled, and she stared curiously at the slave sitting beside her. The slave was staring intently at Adam.
“That girl…” she brought her eyes to meet Adam’s “That girl, is sitting right here.” She pointed to the slave on her side. Adam’s head snapped and he looked at the girl for the first time. She was quite pretty, her brown hair fell…nay, cascaded down her shoulders, she also wore a simple leather top, which held her well-shaped body. And wore only what most men hoped was just a loincloth, that stopped anyone from seeing to much, as well as accentuate her hips. She was kneeling with her head higher, staring at Adam’s face; she had eyes that could only be called true blue. Her face was pale, and well developed with stong cheek bones that slanted down her face giving her a very elegant look.
“A- Abella…?” Adam could barely take in the amount she had changed.
“Adam?” the girl was looking at him, and tears were once again falling down her face.
“Jesus Christ! Abella you’ve been sitting there the whole time?”
“I didn’t know it was you!” she cried out.
Adam laughed, “This girl, she is the one I have come looking for. Let me take her, I’ll buy her if I have to.”
The woman wiped a pretend tear from her eye. “This is all very touching, but this slave is not for sale.”
Adam looked at her in disbelief. “She must be, she’s my sister, she can’t stay here!”
The woman admired her well taken care of fingernails. “Looks like your out of luck. You know what you could do? You could buy a sister, just pick a girl and she’ll be your sister forever,” she wagged her eyebrows, “or maybe more.”
Adam was outraged by her immaturity, and shouted through his anger trying to keep calm. “How can you be so cool about this? Please, let me take her.”
She smiled, “By the way, my name is Madame Alysia. Welcome… Adam, is it?”
Adam gritted his teeth and pushed himself up. He pointed a finger at Madame Alysia, but felt the cold steel of a pistol against his head before he could yell.
“I think that’s just about enough of your shouting Mr. Adam.” Said one of the closest slavers, holding the pistol against his head.
Adam lowered his hand, and stared at Madame Alysia.
“Could I please take her back?” he tried desperately one last time.
Madame Alysia stroked Abella again, seeming to think about her next answer.
“You know, no one has ever said please to me before. But… as the situation has played out… I have no choice but to say no. If I were you I would return to my ship before I decided to decide a worse fate for yourself.”
Adam watched as Abella sagged to the ground and cried, forming a small pond of crystal tears. She looked up at him once more, her eyes plead for him to do something, and her eyes seemed to emanate her pain. Adam turned his back away from her, and faced the door, he could feel his eyes burning, and he let his head drop so his crew couldn’t see his eyes. His hair fell around his face forming a dark circle blocking out a clear view of his eyes.
“Lets go back to the ship.” He said, his voice sounded defeated. As he slowly made his way through the heavily packed corridors, Adam seemed to drag his feet down the halls, and as slavers jeered at them, and as slavers pushed him back and forth he merely walked on oblivious to the punishment his body was taking. They entered the docking bay, and saw their ship surrounded by slavers; they had broken into the interior and were sacking everything of value. Still Adam kept walking seemingly unaware of the chaos around him. He made his way up the ramp to his ship and slipped by two slavers carrying out the shower set. He walked to the pilots seat, and sat down… only to find it had been taken too. He fell heavily on his back and sat there for many moments staring at the ceiling.
“Man…” Scipio began “they even took the toaster we put in the dash of the ship, these guys really are cruel.”
Vida stared at Adam; she wasn’t sure what to do now. Adam always knew what to do next, but now there he was staying silent, and staring at the ceiling. She wanted to say something, she felt it was the right thing to do; they couldn’t just leave Abella there.
Jonah was also at a loss, he couldn’t sleep with all this tension in the air, and from the look on Adams face he would need a serious drink, or some more moon dust to change his attitude.
Vida stood up and walked over to Adam where she got down onto her knees so that she was hanging upside down over his head.
“Adam, hey Adam…” she nudged his shoulder trying to get him out of his trance. “Adam!” She pushed him harder, getting irritated. “Wake up! We need you what are we going to do now?” Vida nearly shouted, still he didn’t move. “You can’t just shut down like this, we’re your friends, and we need to do this together!” She had scooted around his head so that she was looking down directly into his eyes. “God damnit Adam…” Vida shook as she grabbed him by his shirt. Vida felt almost helpless, she had never been unable to help anyone before, and now she didn’t know what to do. She pulled Adam up by the scruff of his shirt and pressed her lips against his. She felt as her hair fell over them and covered them. A shroud of red isolated them from everyone, and Vida found herself staring into Adam’s eyes, she saw tears were streaming down them, slowly they swiveled through her kiss to lock onto hers, and she saw the pain that he was keeping inside. Slowly she let her lips part from his and watched him, his arms shot up and hugged her, holding her close. Vida found her chin pressed against his shoulder with her mouth nearly touching Adam’s ear.
“Remember… remember what Abella looked like, when you first saw her? She looked as though you were her knight in shining armor. How can you leave her, she’s your sister, you wouldn’t have left one of us there! Do you remember what she looked like as we left; I know you saw her, that’s why you turned away. You saw her pain, and now you share it. Use that, do something, don’t shut your self out.” Vida said quietly, her eyes were downcast as she talked, but she raised them as she finished talking and saw Adam’s eyes wide, staring at her own.
“I…I promised never to fight…” he said in almost a whisper. “That’s why I went to Erandor in the first place, I didn’t want to fight anymore.” Tears had begun to form around his eyes.
Vida looked at him, and realized just how much she didn’t know about him. He was always friendly, and no doubt a little dumb, but she never thought about his past. ‘Who are you?’ she thought silently.
“Sometimes we need to fight… Especially if it’s for someone we love. Then we should fight our hardest, because they’re all we have.”
Adams mouth formed around her last few words. “All we have….” He repeated. Adam raised his head and looked around. He saw the other two men watching them, and he looked back to Vida, he brought a hand to her head and kissed her again. Vida’s eyes widened in surprise, she hadn’t expected for it to happen a second time. Adam stood up and brushed himself off. His eyes had gone cold; they had turned from there natural brown, to a cold gray. Only Vida seemed to have noticed.
“Stay here. I’ll be back.” Adam said, in a cold steely voice. He walked out the door, and as it slid back Vida heard him tapping on the pad, and heard the second metallic click that signified Adam had put in the code for it to lock. She heard his foot steps down the metal ramp, they stopped for a moment, and there was some shuffling sounds followed by the noise of something dropping onto the ramp. The two boys were staring at Vida, their mouths hung open as she turned back.
“You…kissed him.” Scipio said in astonishment.
Vida blushed.
“I can’t believe I never saw it after all this time.” Scipio shook his head in amazement.
“Can you hack into their cameras Scip? I want to see what Adam is doing.” Jonah perked up from the back.
“Sure thing just give me a minute, it’s pretty easy, all I have to do is re route the syst-“
Scipio was cut off from his sentence, by a loud blaring sound.
“Attention all employees. There is an intruder in sector 2B, calling for reinforcements.”
The trio looked at each other.
“Ok… here we go. Lets see, sector 2B… here it is, and tadah there’s… oh my god!”
Vida stood up and went over to the small screen in the dash.
“What? What is it?”
“I’ll put it on the screen window.” Scipio tapped a button followed by a soft “blip” sound and a pictured appeared on the window. Adam was calmly walking down the hall. There were unconscious slavers behind him with more standing in front. All of them were holding pistols aimed at Adam. Vida peered closer at the screen and realized that Adam was holding two pistols in his hands; both were smoking from having been recently fired. It was then that Vida realized…. those slavers weren’t unconscious… they were dead.
Adam stood coolly in the hall; he stopped twenty feet from the group of slavers. His head had been looking down as he walked and as he stopped his head rose. He raised the two guns and aimed them at the group and pulled the trigger. All the slavers stood together and recognized his action, they drew their guns and fired. The screen was filled with laser fire for a few moments. When it stopped Adam still stood in the same position, he was pulling the trigger but nothing was happening. The guns weren’t working. He dropped the pistol in his left hand, and Adam looked at the slavers for a split second and then pointed at the gun with his finger then threw it up in the air. Vida saw as every eye of the slavers followed the gun as it was airborne, by the time any of the slavers noticed that it was a diversion it was too late.
Adam ran at the group when the second he had thrown the gun into the air. He met the first man with a punch to his face that sent him off his feet and into a few other slavers. He ducked as a laser shot over his head and turned his dodge into an attack as he crouched. He attacked the shins of one of the slaver in front of him causing the man to collapse and hold his now oddly shaped leg. Adam fell to the floor on his back as a sweeping kick came overhead. He popped his body sending his legs flying into another slavers stomach, and landed standing up. A fifth slaver punched at Adam at head height, but found he was hitting air. Adam grabbed the arm of the man and viciously broke it with a downward punch, and disposed of him with a kick that sent him into the wall. He turned around and caught a punch in the stomach causing him to double over for a moment. Adam grimaced for an instant, then grabbed this slavers arm and fell over backwards using his momentum and legs to throw the slaver behind him. He rolled over his shoulder and back onto his feet, narrowly dodging a kick as he did so. He countered by grabbing the leg of the man who had kicked and picked him off the ground twirling him 90 degrees sending him crashing into the nearby wall. With ease Adam dispatched the rest of the men and again found himself in an empty corridor. Adam took off running, and entered the staircase where he came to the fifth floor much faster than the four had a while before.
Scipio turned to Vida. “Did Adam really do all that?”
“I... I don’t know if that’s Adam any more.” She said in almost a whisper, as though she were afraid Adam could hear her. Vida watched as Adam opened the door to the fifth floor. He had barely opened it when a small flash appeared from inside and blood spurted from his shoulder. He feels on one knee grasping his shoulder. A slaver walked out cautiously aiming the gun at Adam. Vida wished these cameras had sound, as the slaver began talking. Vida’s brain didn’t’ have time to register what happened next, Adam flew up and placed both hands on the mans head, then twisted brutally and let the man drop into his arms. He grabbed the gun from the dead slavers hands, and moved forward aiming the gun and shooting, while holding the dead body upright. Vida watched shocked, as the body jerked wildly from the lasers hitting it.
“My god!” Vida covered her mouth in silent horror. “Change the camera! What’s happening?”
Scipio gave her a sorrowful look. “I can’t there’s no more cameras, I guess the boss didn’t want her personal business to be seen.”
Vida watched the screen intently. A few minutes passed and they saw nothing.
“Look!” Vida screamed at everyone. A man had come running out of the doors, he looked terrified. He turned to look behind him and something flashed. Something shot out from his head, and the slaver seemed to sway for a moment before folding into the ground.
Vida shook her head. “What the hell are you doing Adam?”
More time passed, and it wasn’t until twenty minutes after he had gone in that her merged again. He pushed open the door with his foot; he had Abella in his arms. She was crying furiously and covering her eyes at the gore from Adams forced entry. The crew gave a small sigh of relief and sat down to wait again. Scipio began to watch as Adam made his way back, and they all turned as they heard the familiar tapping at the pad out side. The door slid back, and a slaver stood outside, quivering in fear.
“P- p- p- please h- help me. He’s here….h- he’s killed everyone!”
Vida looked at the man, but was unable to respond to his pleas as Adam appeared behind the man. He stood behind him for a moment, looming over the poor slaver. Adam placed Abella down and picked up the man by his shirt looking into the mans, as he stared he seemed to crack for a moment and his eyes turned from cold gray back to brown. He turned to see Abella, holding her legs closely, while rocking back and forth, and he watched as his crew stared in horrific fascination at his action. He suddenly shook himself roughly and dropped the slaver who scrambled off with a look of terror plastered on his face. He turned to everyone pointed to Abella and said,
“I would like everyone to meet Abella.” Before everything went black.
A Conclusion
When the light finally came rushing back in Adam found himself looking at a white ceiling.
“What… what happened?” He groaned, and shifted to an upright position. His head was pounding, and he felt like his skull was being squeezed from all directions at once. He looked up to see the waiting form of Abella sitting on his bed. She giggled as she saw him wake up.
“Hey sleepy head.” She said, her voice sounded truly happy.
“Ouch, my head, it feels like a vise.”
“V says that’s from the sedatives she gave you, and that to tell you, that you thoroughly deserve it for kissing her.” Abella smiled proudly.
“I didn’t know that you liked her… I didn’t know that you liked any girl!”
Adam smiled. “Well, I can tell you one girl that I like.” He said with a smile, and she’s sitting right in front of me.
Abella giggled, “Adam, you really need to grow up.” She said flashing him a grin.
“Where’s everyone else? We still are in the ship right?” he suddenly felt very groggy.
The girl shrugged her shoulders, “They must be up top.” She leaned in and whispered “V is really cute, I think you did good.”
“I… I think I’m going to go to sleep again.”
Abella nodded her head, her long hair jumping up and down. “Yup, V said this would happen, you would be awake for about five minutes then hit the sack again, but I thought I would let you know I’m alright.” She smiled down at him. “Nighty night.”
Adams brain yearned to stay awake, but his eyelids dropped and he felt the cold coma envelope him, burning the last image of Abella into his mind.
When he awoke again, his brain felt a haze of slurred colors. His eyes were half open, and his vision slurred around a strange creature standing over him. “‘Geroff ‘e!” he garbled at the creature, his head was turning in circles. He heard it speak but couldn’t make out any of the words. He saw the blurry thing move, and reach towards him. He felt a sharp pain and slowly his vision cleared to giveaway to Vida sitting on the bed with a needle in hand. She smiled softly at him. “Good morning sunshine. You should be feeling better now that I’ve given you a booster shot.”
Adam sat up slowly feeling as though his brain were a melted puddle of goop. “Am I alright?”
“Yeah, you weren’t really hurt. But, you will have a scar on your shoulder from now on. Other than that you’re all patched up.”
“How… how long was I out?”
She shrugged her shoulders, “About three days. You must have really been worn out.”
He struggled to support himself on his elbows, and turned to Vida.
“What happened?”
She looked at him oddly. “It… it was strange. You see, when you passed out we pulled you back into the ship and flew out the docking bay into space. Well, as we were exiting we were hailed by the pirate space station, apparently you had left Madam Alysia still alive and she was really angry. You should have seen her.” She gave Adam a little grin. “Anyway, she was seriously pissed, and out of nowhere the top seemed to spread apart and a great big gun came out, it was even bigger than the gun mounted on the Mammoth. And just when we thought things couldn’t get any better something started flashing on our radar, there was this object speeding our direction. We thought it was another pirate ship, but when we did a scan on it showed it to be a cube. Meanwhile Madam Alysia was slowly moving her humongous gun to aim at us as we floored it and tried to run. Well, as it would turn out that cube we had detected was on a direct course into the station. We actually flew past it as it ran and we had the computer take a picture of it, and…… well… you had better look.” She turned around and rummaged around somewhere Adam couldn’t see. When she turned back around Vida was holding a picture in her hands. Adam took the picture and stared at it, but couldn’t believe his eyes. The picture was fuzzy, and he could only just make out the words “socks” written on the side.
“A box? So what? There’s plenty of stuff floating through space.”
“Well…” she grinned at him, as she started talking once more. “This box actually was gong quite fast which is why we could only get such a blurry picture… and everyone knows what happens when something very fast hits something else, even if it is cardboard.”
Adam looked at her with an expression of disbelief, “No…”
Vida grinned and nodded, “Mmmhmmmm…. Smacked right into the station and made a hole in the side. The whole thing just decompressed.”
“So… we got away right?”
“Of course!”
“What are we doing now?”
Vida shrugged her shoulders. “Well, we were waiting for you to wake up after we had run far enough we didn’t know what else to do so we decided to wait until you wake up. Now that you’re up… what do you want to do?”
Adam looked around searching for some sort of inspiration. His eyes landed softly on Vidas face and with a grin pulled her towards him.
“I think… I think I would like to kiss you again.
