Yesterday me, grandpa, and my brothers went on sort of a family road trip to some of grandpa's old stomping grounds. First, we went over to Turtle Buttes. We ate lunch before we climbed them. I ate a nectarine with my pocket knife. I spotted a couple of toads. Their markings were different from the toads back home, but I suspect it was because of the difference in terrain. After lunch, we climbed the buttes. My younger brother, AKA Grayscar, found a piece of petrified vertebrae and I collected a few rock samples. There was cacti everywhere. There was fruit on the cacti, but none of it was ripe yet. Climbing the buttes was awesome, even though I ended up getting slightly sunburnt. After we climbed back down, we got into our swimsuits and drove over to a crick where grandpa used to play when he was young. When we got there, we went down to the crick, took our shoes off, and stepped in. Guess what? There were real, live, frogs there! I know some of you may be thinking, "So what?", but here in Fort Pierre, we don't see a lot of frogs, even down by the river. We have mostly toads here, and we don't even see many of those. Anyway, we explored the crick for about an hour and a half. We found a cool tree that we liked to play under. After that, we travelled in the opposite direction (Grayscar insisted on leading) and I spotted a crawdad claw. We then travelled back towards the tree and I spotted another frog. I also spotted a bunch of minnows and we saw some weird metallic blue-gree dragonflies with black wings. After we finished playing in the crick, we got our regular clothes back on and got into the van to drive home. Believe me, I had sand in places I didn't even know I had! Everyone had to take showers when we got home. We were all tired, but we had a lot of fun.
