This is a posting I typed for one of the Anime topics. I really like what I wrote and wanted to keep it all handy, so I'm posting it in my journal too.
Yes saying the A word gets you somewhat outcast in high school, but it's not your fault really.
Most people have only been exposed to Sailor moon when it came out originally and DBZ (which dispite being popular lost its momentum when it took 10 episodes for a planet that was epxloding in 5 minutes to happen). It was such a horrible dub (SM) that people consider all anime must be the same way. So no one gives any anime a chance any more.
The other problem anime faces is FanGirlz and FanBoyz, the rabid people that half cosplay to school, squeal, use random japanese words etc. Don't get me wrong I went through that phase too, but it freaks out your average high schoolers.
Finally there's sub and dub, both sabotage themselves. A bad dub ruins its chances of being taken seriously. For subs its that most people are lazy or think they can't watch the show while trying to read the subs so what's the point.
I think if your average person watched some more adult and modern like Gungrave, Full Metal Alchemist, Wolf's Rain etc.. That they might give everything else a chance, but you have to get them to sit down first....

Inconsistent Ramblings
My general musings of the moment. I don't really know what I'll post about or how often. Shouldn't really matter though, I don't have a lot of people on my friends list yet and I don't actively participate in the forums.

Ah... High School. How foolish. By the way, I've never watched Gungrave, but the other two are excellent suggestions, though I prefer the manga of Wolf's Rain to the anime. (It's opposite for FMA, which is also one of the few anime series in which I prefer watching the dub instead of the sub.)
