I know they say people change, but I can’t seem to get the image of Isaiah with that girl out of my head. I saw him laughing and hugging her as she tried to get away playfully. I fell to my knees in defeat, realizing now that he had no idea how I felt, even when I made it clear. All I could think about now was the betrayal of my father to my mother and how Isaiah betrayed me. I remember the day in vivid colors.
It was early summer; the sun was just sinking below the horizon and the hum of cicadas droned in the distance. We sat on a log on the beach, watching the sunset. When I looked up at Isaiah, his face was so deep in thought. I had to tell him the truth, even if it destroyed our friendship.
“Isaiah?” I took a deep breath and looked up at him hopefully.
Isaiah looked down at me with a smile, “Yes, Kala?”
I looked at his long, dark hair and longed to run my fingers through it.
“I… I like you… No, I love you,” I whispered quietly.
He started laughing and said, “Sorry, I’m interested in someone far more interesting than you. Hope we can still be friends?”
My world shook and my eyes blurred with tears that I held back, in fear of Isaiah seeing the tears and misinterpreting them. The tears were not because of the rejection, the laughing, or the way he blew it off, but because I knew he liked someone else, even when it was clear I liked him. Though I knew he would say he has someone else, I never thought he would be so cold.
A woman’s voice brought me back to the present.
“Miss, are you alright?” An elderly woman stood above me, cell phone in hand, ready to call for an ambulance.
I shook my head yes and stood up. I took off running in the way of the woods, my safe haven. I heard Isaiah call for me. I knew that he could tell it was me, even from the back, though I was a dark shadow in the light. My name literally meant ‘black’ in some language my dad never told me. I was often labeled as ‘gothic’ or ‘emo’ because of my black attire.
I ran through the woods silently, as I often did. I heard someone crashing after me. I figured it was Isaiah, trying to figure out what was wrong. The footsteps sounded a bit off though. I ran into my usual clearing and turned to wait for him. I was more than surprised when a pale guy, about my age, which is 17, stood there, breathing heavily. He reached for me and I suddenly trusted him as I let him embrace me.
“You don’t have to feel alone, Kala. I’ve been here all along,” he whispered, voice full of tears and regret.
I realized now that this wasn’t just anyone. It was Malachi, his name meaning ‘my angel’. He was my angel, my fallen angel. Malachi was more than that to me. He has been watching over me since Isaiah betrayed me, and my dad betrayed my family. I almost killed myself because I believed it was my fault. He said he would always find me, no matter what life I took on after this one, for we were soul mates. It seemed that it was love at first sight.
I hugged him tightly and sobbed into his chest. I felt his warm, black wings embrace me as well and take away my pain. He tipped my chin back and kissed me passionately for the first time.
